New York—Some Complaint About
the Matter. But the Government
Has no Right to Interfere.
NEW YORK, Nov. 1.——The Times this
morning says that six more United States
merchant steamships have been purchased
by the government Of Brazil for use as
warships—the powerful El Bio, of the
Morgan line, and the Advance, Finance,
Alliance, Seguran'ca and Figilanoa of the
recent United States and Brazil mail
steamship company.
.These last purchases gives to the Brazil
government ten new vessels.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 1.—The situation
in Brazil is still the most interesting mat-
ter in the state and navy departments and
the secrecy with which oiliclals, who: may
or maynot know anything that is going
on, surround themselves lends additional
force to the belief that great things are
about to happen.
So far as the report that the New York
.is going to Rio is concerned, Secretary
Herbert absolutely refuses to discuss the
subject. He says that he has given
out 1111 he intends to make public at this
time. His subordinates are quite reticent,
while at the state department the word
“Brazil” from a newspaper mun acts as
the cue for a chilly recep‘ion.
There are many rumors concerning the
selection oi a successor to Admiral Stan-
ton as commander~in-chiei of the south
Atlantic station, and the names most
prominently mentioned are commodores
Ramsey, Kirkland and Meade.
DESTROYER LEAVES NEWPORT.
Brazil’s New Purchase to Be Fitted
and Manned. in New York.
NEWPORT, R. I., N ov. 1.—The Destroyer
sailed for New York this morning in tow
oi the tugScandinavian. C. H. Bushnell,
vice-president of the Ericsson company,
has been in town all day. He says there
is now no secret about the sale of the
craft to the Brazilian government.
Five men, it is calculated, will be all
that are necessary to man her on her down
trip.
There are in the possession of the Erics-
son company ten projectiles, six new and
four old ones. The new ones were ordered
by our government, but never paid for, so
the ship people have paid the bill and
claimed the projectiles without protest.
They will have to be loaded to be made
serviceable for fighting. There is regret
expressed by the naval oilicers that the net
trials have been brought to this untimely
end, but there seems little reason for the
abuse of the government for not purchas-
ing the vessel.
BRAZIL‘S NEW FLEET.
Complaints Aboutvthe Fitting Out of
the “far Ships in New York.
NEW YORK, Nov. ].—El Cid has been so
far fitted for the reception of her armament
that she will go to the pier oi the Morgan
ironworks to-morrow to receive her guns.
The Morgan line steamer El Rio, which
has also been bought by the Brazilian gov-
ernment, arrived at her pier last night.
It is understood that complaints have
been made concerning the fitting out and
arming oi the new Brozilian fleet, ,but
there is no law which could prevent the
sole of vessels by citizens of the United
States to a friendly power, but the ship~
ping of men is a diiferent thing and may
come under the “foreign enlistment act,”
so-ealled.
It is, however believed that the new
fleet of Brazil will be able to get away
from these shores without any trouble.
Reading Railroad Earnings.
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. l.-—'l‘he September
statement of the Philadelphia & Reading
railroad shows gross receipts during the
month, $1,946,595: gross expenses, $1,-
019, 68; leaving a profit from operating
or $927 327. Net receipts from other
sources, $35, 786; making a not profit oi
$963,113.

SUSQUEHANNA, Pa, Nov. l.—Beginning
to-day, the extensive locomotive works of
the New York. Lake Erie & Western rail-
road at this place will be in operation 28
hours per Week instead of 24 hours as
heretofore.

‘VASHINGTON, Nov. l.—-Reports of the
havoc done by the recent hurricanes in
the North Atlantic ocean continue to be
received by the hydrographic office of the
