Benjamin Hamilton was arrested by oflicer Gladstone, this morning,charged with an assault upon a newsboy named Schlitt. in East Norwalk. Hamilton pleaded guilty, and Justice Barrett im- posgd a fine of 9,53 and costs, which was pai . Mrs. Henry Jones died at her home in East Norwalk on Monday. The de- ceased was a recognized leader in church work, .and was a Woman of many charitable deeds. The funeral will be attended from the East Nor- walk Methodist church,Thursday after- noon. Oflicer Gr. Washington Gladstone, while standing close to the depot plat- form this morning as the Parlor car express came whizzing by, was made the victim of one of those patent Illi- nois corn planters, which some passen- ger seems to have been experimenting with in the car lavatory. The sixth annual ball of the East Nor- walk Fife and Drum Corps was held at Germania hall last evening. About fif- ty couples were present and'an unusual- ly fine time was had. Dancing was kept up until an early hour this morning and all present voted this the best ball given by the corps. Heine’s orchestra furnished music and Harry Richmond prompted. Druggist Frank H. .Baxter has a telephone in his store that out dates the telephone invented by the German Reiss. It is supposed to be a Bell tele- phone, but if Prof. Bell was called upon to use it we would wager a new hat that he would deny its paternity. In these days of exhorbitant telephone charges it might be well for the company to furnish something one can hear and talk through. Some time Sunday night thieves forced an entrance into the cellar un- der the shoe store kept by Phillip Ny- good on Railroad Place. They then ascended the stairs and broke the bolt securing the back door and entered the store and stole two pairs of shoes. The shoes were not missed until some time yesterday, and the police were not notified of the burglary until late in the afternoon. At the special meeting of the Council last evening the Mayor presided, and with the exception of A. G. Judson and E. F. Knapp the councilmen were all present. A communication from Attor- ney George A. Honnecker as attorney for Mrs. Reeks claiming $100 damages for falling into a sewer,was referred to the city attorney. A resolution was passed authorizing the committee to borrow sufficient money to meet the expenses of the city, giving the city bonds as collateral. The amount to be borrowed not to exceed $30,000. Mr. T._Euphrat, of Darien, expects to have his life saving apparatus in ,full this week. The officers of the com- pany after _a thorough investigation of all life savmg devices for rapid transit cars unhesitatingly pronounced Mr. Euphrat’s device the best, and have ordered them placed upon the cars of the Broadway line. The Sunday World published a full ‘decription of the de- v1ce on Sunday last, together with an excellent cut of the device attached to user. Mr. Euphrat has a good in- vention and will no doubt realize handsomely from it. There is no one in South Norwalk who enaoys a Joke better than Alderman Judson, and no one enjoys playing one upon the unsuspecting better than he. Yesterday, however, Judson undertook to playna Joke upon a lady canvasser, but owmg to having an heir apparent the yoke was turned upon himself. A Miss Dav1s, who is canvassing the city for the New York Morning Journal, called at the market and asked for'Mr. Judson. . The knight of the cleaver tipped hishat and said that he was the party. Miss Davis then unfolded to Jud the beauties, etc., of the Journal and closed by stating that in addition to the Journal the Yout-h’s Companion was also sent. After she had finished her description of the latter paper the Alderman, with one of his most pleas- ing smiles, informed the lady that if he was married he would be pleased to subscribe for the Journal. Before Miss Dams had recovered from her astonish- ment that one so handsome as the Ald- erman should be a single man, the young heir of the Alderman bounded into the_market with the remark, “Pop! I’ve sold the goat.” A cold perspira- tion broke out on Jud. He looked at the lady. The lady looked at him. “I’ll subscr1be,”was all he could say, and he went to the indicator and rang up the bell for the amount of the sub- scription.
