Nine cars joined in the ruin, and the on
gine was smashed beyond recognition.
It was the second section of Oswego
special that ran into the rear end of the
head section. Inside of twenty Einutes
six dead bodies were taken out and the
work had only begun.
The cars are terribly smashed, two of
them being thrown across the track. One
car was driven completely through an-
other, and others Were turned entirely
over. .
. Thousands of people were aboard the two
trains, and they were wedged in in all
kinds of shapes. Some of the cars were
not badly enough wrecked to kill any or‘ the
people on board of them, and it is miracu-
lous, considering the shape the cars were
'left in, that any at all escaped without in-
jury in some of the cars. ,

Freshmen and Sophomores Engage in
Another Fracas.
PRINCETON, N. J., Oct. 14,—The Prince.
ton freshmen and sophomores had another
fracas early yesterday morning.
About 2 o’clock the freshmen made their
appearance on the streets with paste buck-
ets and proclamations. These proclama-
tions, which they posted in prominent
places referred in terms particularly offen-
sive to the sophomores to the recent fresh-
men’s baseball victory.
The sophomores got wind of the enter-
prise and ware out by 3 o’clock, tearing
down the proclamations and preventing
the posting of others. It is said the fresh-
men have posted their manifestos through-
out the adjoining country as far as Tron.

Unable to Longer Stand the Finan-
cial Strain.
NEW YORK, Oct. 14. _In the United
States circuit court of Brooklyn yesterday,
Judge Benedict appointed President S. H.
II. Clark of Omaha, Neb., Vice President
Oliver W. Mink, of Massachusetts and E.
Ellery Anderson of this city, receivers for
the Union Pacific railway company. The
papers were subsequently filed in the United
States circuit court of this city. The ap-
plication was made by Oliver Ames, Peter
B. Wyckoff and Edwin F. Atkins, holders
of bonds and mortgages, the interest on
which has fallen due and has not been met.
Each co-receiver for the southern district
of Now York must qualify in $10,000. The
complaint and answer agree that the cam-
ings of the company for the past year have
largely fallen off on account of financial
dopreusion, decrease in immigration and
general stagnation, until the fixed charges
and operating expenses have exceeded gross
earnings and receipts. There is no pros-
pect, they affirm, ,0! an increase in the
near future to an amount sufficient toena-
ble the company to meet its operating ex-
penses. It is now insolvent and will not
be able to pay rentals, interest, wages and
sinking fund charges.

LONDON, Oct. 14.—The international .
wrestling match between McInerey .of
America and Cannon of Liverpool, for the
world’s championship and 3500, took place
in Liverpool yesterday, evening in the .
presence of an enormous crowd. McInerey
put Cannon on his back in the first round,
which lasted seven minutes. The second
round lasted fifteen minutes and was
highly exciting. McInerey succeeded in
flooring Cannon by the leg, but the latter
recovered and got the American fairly
down, and Cannon was declared the win-
ner amid tumultuous applause.
As Bad as Our Senate.
BUDAPEST, Oct. 15.—-Yesterday’s sit-
ting of the lower house of the Hungarian
diet was very stormy. During Premier
Werkerle’s speech against motions censur-
ing the government the members of the
opposition left the house in a body, while
the members of the government party ap-
plauded the premier enthusiastically. It
was finally decided to shelve the motions.
