Ancient Order of Foresters.
BUFFALO. Sent. 6,—The subsidiary high
court of the Ancient Order of Foresters for
the United States east of the Rocky mou‘n-
tains' is in session here, with 110 delegates
in attendance. The secretary’s and treas-
urer’ 5 reports show that the order is in a
highly prosperous condition. There is a
considerable rivalry fa the next conven-
two. New York Chicago, Philadelphia,
Waterbury and Meridén, Conn“ are the
candidates.

ROME, Sept. 6.-—-Father Frederick Rook—
er, who has left Rome for America with
letters from the pope to \Igr.Satollia11d
- Cardinal Gibbons, was commissioned also
to present to the cardinal a portrait 'of his
holiness. The portrait is carved in stone
and ls set in a frame of gold studded with
gracious stones. The whole work was done’
y the Vatican artificers and is a master-
‘ piece of its kind. .
Sevd'nteen Persons Drowned. .
RoTTERDAM, Sept. 6.-—During the fire
which occurred in the florestry opposite
the Rotte quay at Rotterdam on Sunday
night 25 onlookers, who were aboard a
lighter, rushed to one side, causing it to
capsize. Seventeen were drowned.

Canada’s Oldest \Voman Dead.
MONTREAL, Sept. 6.— Mrs. Elizabeth Me.
Nair, aged over 110 years and probably the
oldest woman in Canada, died near Hunt-
lngdon, where she had lived for 75 years
Her husbandflied some years ago at the
age of 107 years.
Dropped Dead From Excitement.
PORTLAND, Ma. Sept. 6. -—Edward Wait
of Boston, aged 19, was drowned' 1n the Pre-
sumpscot river in Deering yestgrday. Mrs.
Mary Curran, an elderly woman who saw
the accident, dropped dead from excite-
ment.

training ship Monongahela arrived this
