A carpenteremployed in Banks’ car-
penter shop had ”his hand badly lacer-
ated by a plane this morning. . Dr.
Burke was called, and ordered his re-

A woman came up on the Albany

the child appearing better, but Just be.-
fore disembarking at 3lst street, the
child died in its mother’s arms.

Officer Northrop, of the Borough po-
lice, was in this city last night, in re-
sponse to a telegram from Bridgeport
to look out for “Kid ” Conway, _who
was jumping a bond in that city and
was on a freight coming this way. The
officer failed to find the man on, the
.train, but he was there nevertheless.
and as soon as _the officer disappeared
the Kid made his appearance. He did
not leave the train but continued on
his journey towards New York. _
.Ofiicer Gladstone, this morning, was
advised that a. New York firm was car-
rying on a swindling business in this
city, and that an agent of the firm was
canvassing here. A description of the
oncebegan tof‘shadow” him. He also
learnedxof a party. who had been awni-
dled by"the‘ is low, 'and called on
him. 9 officer Was shown re-
ceipts amounting__ to a few dollars.
He located his man in Norwalk and
soon after had him under .arrest. He
gave his'name as W. H. Wilson of the
American Tailoring company of New
York. The parties concerned were noti-
fied of the man’s capture, and as he
made a satisfactory settlement he was
allowed to leave town. .
The regular monthly meeting of the
Council was held last evening. All the
members were present and Mayor Lock-
wood presided. Patrick Kelly filed a
claim for $50 damages, for injuries, re-
ceived last March from a-fall in front of
the new Washington street theatre.
The matter was referred to the City At-
torney. The matter of widening West
street brought out considerable discus-
sion between W. M. Griffin F.-A.Smith,
M. M. Norton and W. B. Rider.
Councilman Fox favored the improve-
ment and submitted the names .of sev-
eral neighbors also in favor of the pro-
posed widening. The matter was, ’how-
ever, postponed until, the next meet-
ing, as was the petition to .extend Third
street. The report of the Chief of P0-
lice was read and accepted. The re-
port on the Lexin ton. avenue water
main was read and a Opted. On motion
of Alderman Judson $100 was appropriaa
ted to complete the work on Quintard
avenue.
_It was voted to authorize the City en-
.gineer to advertise for bids to lay the
Ann street sewer. The Clerk was in-
structed to draw an order for $150 in
favor of the Chief of Police and $200
for the street committe, after which the
meeting adJourned- until Monday Au-
gust 14th, at Music Hall, immediately
held that'evening.
