TROY, N. Y., Aug. 5.—A pleasure party,
while going to a dance at the lower end of
Lake George, met with a terrible casualty.
The steam yacht Rachel, whichisowned
by~D. W. Sherman, proprietor of the Pearl
Point House, Lake George, was conveying
29 people up the lake. The little vessel
was turned toward the One Hundred Is-
landing when the passengers were thrown
foTWard .by. a sudden shock. In the dark
the vessel had run upon a sunken pier, and
before assistance arrived from the shore it
sank with all on board.
' ' Battled For Life.
It web only a few moments after" the
shock when the yacht careened to one side
and went down in 18 feet of water. The
shrieking,- struggling passengers battled
up their arms and sank beneath the sur-
face and when brought ashore life had
fled. Deeds of heroism were performed by
the men. When all in sight had reach ed
the shore, it was learned that eight or nine
persons, all women except a youth of 19,
had sunk to watery graves. As soon as
possible an attempt to recover the bodies
was made. After strenuous efforts all
the bodies were brought to the surface.
Those Who lost their lives are said to re-
side in‘Troy, Brooklyn, Hoboken' and War-
rensburg. The dead are:

the Pacific coast. Mr. Stevenson has just
left for Washington. Mrs. Stevenson is
somewhat fatigued; and did not accom-
pany her husband to the capital. She will
remain here till next fall.

Every Train East Carries Several Hun-
dred of the Destitute Minors—Soldiers
Are Guarding Son'rie of the Cars.
TOPE'KA, Aug. 5.—-The exodus of Colo-
rado miners continues through Kansas,
proving a heavy burden to the western
farmers and a source of great annoyance
to the railroads. The tramp trains on the
several roads carry from 200 to 400 each day
going east, and the regular trains are still
besieged by idle and destitute miners, who
are determined to get out of the country.
The crowds are so great in Denver that
the first class passenger trains frequently
back away from the depot and then run
through the station at full speed in order
to prevent the men from jumping on.
Trains that refuse to step are pelted with
rocks and clubs.
In some instances the trains are accomQ
panied through Kansas by guards of sol-
diers to avoid any interference with regu-
lnr travel by these flying laborers. The
Kansas farmers are feeding them along
the route whenever they are able to do so,
and many of the men have accepted work
on the farms.
BELL IN THE SAME BOAT.
He Chmclscd Other Pensioners For Doing
W’hat He Himself Had Done.
'WASIIINGTON, Aug. 5.-—-It has just leaked
out from the archives of. the pension bu-
reau that Deputy Commissioner Bell, who
has made numerous public statements
severely condemning the disability pension
of Judge Long and others, was himself in
the same boat with the pensioners who are
now hauled up for his scrutiny. Up to
the 31st of May last he drew a disability
pension of $12 a month for “loss of teeth,
indigestion and heart disease,” alleged to
be the result of his military service.
The decision of Assistant Secretary Rey-
nolds, which placed the ablebodied veter-
ans beyond the pale of the pensionable, was
rendered on the 27th of May. Four days
later, on the 31st, Mr. Bell addressed a let-
ter to the commissioner in which he re-
signed his pension, declaring that he had
considered himself entitled to it under
former decisions, but thought under the
Reynolds ruling he was no longer entitled
to draw the amount.
Deputy Commissioner Bell, wheh asked
if the statement about his having drawn a
disability pension for himself was true, re-
plied: “I supposed that thing would come
out soOner or later. Yes, it’s true.’.’

Senator Mitchell Sued.
MILWAUKEE, Aug. 5. —Mrs. Maria L.
Mitchell, widow of Alexander Mitchell,
has begun a suit against her son, Senator
J ohu L. Mitchell, and the Wisconsin Mar
