Forty-three employees of the Nor-
_ Gwalk Lock company were laid ofi this
afternoon.
The South Norwalk club will hold its
first annual clam bake at Boton Point,
Tuesday, August 1st.
The circus bill posters arrived in
town this morning andO‘are at work
putting up bills for the circus.
The tramwayconductors can now be
distinguished from the passengers by
the neat looking caps which they wear.
The fight between the binders and
the Volk Hat company is still on and
no work was done at- the factory today.
The schooner Eva L. IFerris is re-
ported at New York, on route from
Norfolk to South Norwalk, with coal
for John H. Ferris.
Mrs. Styles’ watch was returned to
her last- evening by Hamilton Wilcox
who found it, and read the notice of
the loss in the GAZETTE.

The Elks Lodge of Orange, N. J.,
picnicked at Roton Point, yesterday and
enjoyed the first clam bake that has
been given at that place this season. A
colored excursion from New Haven
was also at the Point.
Col. Frost is attending a meeting this
afternoon at the Adjutant - General’s
_ office in Hartford, of the Adjutant-
General, Commissary-General and the
Colonels of the four regiments of the
Connecticut National Guard, which is
held to perfect the plans and arrange-
ments for rationing the regiments while
at the Niantic encampment this year.

der the new military law, have been

At a meeting of the Knob. Outing
Aclub yesterday afternoon Dr. L. M.
Allen and Munson Purdee were elected
members and the privileges of the
club were extended to Capt. William
H. Hoyt' of West avenue and R. P.
Wakeman of Southport, who have ap-
plied for membership. The amuse-
ment committee of the club have an-
nounced 8. Rhode Island clambake as
on the card for Wednesday afternoon
next, and sailing and rowing races for
Saturday, July 29th.
Mrs. Manuel T. Hatch’s horse ran
away with her yesterday afternoon, and
that the accident didnot result fatally
was a miracle. She was driving down
the steep hill on Cedar street, near
West avenue, about 2 o’clock, when
her carriage ran against the horse’s
heels causing him to run. The horse
has been driven lately without a
breeching strap, and when hitched up
yesterday the harness was not preperly
adJusted and thus caused the accident.
The animal turned into West avenue at
a furious gait, Mrs. Hatch retaining
hold of the reins until in front of the
residence of Gould Seymour, where
the carriage collided with a dump cart
and Mrs. Hatch was thrown out. She
was picked up in an unconscious condi-
tion and taken into the house and Dr.
Clark summoned. The Doctor found
that no bones were broken but that
Mrs. Hatch had sustained a painful
bruise on her hip and that her faCe was
quite badly scratched. She was re-
later in the afternoon. This morning
she was reported as resting easily.
The carriage was a total wreck but the
horse was not injured.
