ponded to an alarm of fire in 'New
Canaan last night.

Several members of the Canoe Asso-

bor blackfishing this morning, in his

Box 21-4-11-44-3-2-1-3 was struck last
night about ten o’clock for a fire in
New Canaan. The Superintendent of
fire alarm will explain later.
Jesse M. Ferris severely injured one
of his feet Tuesday, while Skylarking
in front of the Old Well Hook & Lad-
der house, and now walks with a crutch
and cane.
The GAZETTE representitive was
hauled over the coals this morning for
stating yesterday that the Jake crew
“took water.” This is emphatically
denied by friends of the parties.
About thirty members of Putnam
Hose 00. took the 10‘o’clock boat for
Roton Point this morning, where they
will Spend the day and enjoy a shore
dinner, as-guests of E. A. Wciodward.
The Washington express was half an
hour late this morning owing to the
breaking down of the engine at Fair-
field. When the train reached South
Norwalk the engi e of Conductor
Fury’s train was subsl’f tuted and the ex-
press was sent ahead. 4
The lightning last evening severed
the trolley wire on the Washington
street bridge, just below the present
stopping place of the cars. The cars
continued to run up to the bridge until
about 10 o’clock when they were stop-
ped. Early this morning the wire was»
' connected and trafiic was resumed.
Mr. I. L. Holt, representing the
Royal Insurance Co. and others, and
Mr. Reed, representing the Boylston
and other companies, were in this city
this morning adjusting the losses at the
Hallock Bros. box factory fire, which -
occurred early Sunday morning. They .
visited the scene of the fire, and looked ,
over the wreck or the factory, but at ‘
this writing had come to no agreement .
as to the amount of the loss.
Any number of limbs were broken
fromtrees, and trees blown down, in
this city, last evening. 'In front of A.
J. Crofut’s residence on West avenue, =
the limbs were torn from three trees, 5
and in front of Undertaker Gregory’s '
residence on Elizabeth street, a tree,
was blown over. At Moss Hill Villa
nearly all the window awnings on the
west side of the house were destroyed.
Alarge limb of a tree in front of the
Union School was also broken off.
For once in his life Dudley P. Ely has
been outwitted. This was done yUst
way company was the party to do it.
It seems that the company have wanted
to stretch "a cable from their network

About noon yesterday a gangvof:mcn
were working atthe pole when Mr. Ely
came in sight and asked what they were
doing. They replied that they were
straightening , the. pole but promised
not 1.!) attach a rope to the building to
do so. As soon'as Mr. Ely disappeared
the men climbed to the t0p of the ho-.
tel and fastened a rope from the pole to
a chimney and pulled the pole into po-
sition and then cemented it fast. When
Mr. Ely returned and saw what had
been "done ‘he Was exceeding wroth and
called. down all—j sorts of, vengeance on
the heads of the_‘tr‘amWay-company,‘b_ut-
the workmen had lied and he-‘ talked
only to a croWd of amused and inter-
ested spectators. The rope is. still. there
to-day and the pole-is in its right p081-
tion and the tramway company .will
goon string its-cable and the .cars will
