Terrible Destruction from Forest Fires in
Wisconsin—Hundreds Homelesi.
‘ DULUTH, June 19 —The result of a year
of enterprise on the Mesaba. range has
been wiped out in a single day. Advices
received indicate that the towns of Vir-
ginia and Mountain Iron have been de-
stroyed, and that Biwabik is partially if
not entirely wiped out. It is impossible
to estimate the loss, but it will approxi-
mate $l,000,000, and several thousand peo-
1e are homeless. Forest fires have been
urning on all sides of the new mining
towns, and only by the greatest effort has
the disaster been so long averted.
In Duluth the news was followed by im-
mediate preparations to care for the hun-
dreds of homeless people. A special train
was ordered by President Greabinger, of
the Duluth and Iron Range railroad, and
ear loads of provisions were ordered. It
reached the range about midnight, when
1,100 people, mostly women and children,
were loaded in ore cars and brought to
Duluth. The train arrived at 2 o’clock
this morning, and preparations are being
made to care for the sufferers. President
Spencer, of the council, the acting mayor,
authorizeda gift of $1,000 from the cit
and all the provisions that may be neede
for immediate relief. Ample aid will be
offered the suffering people. Communica-
tion with the range is cut off. .
ASHLAND, Wis., June 19.—Iron River, a
.thriving lumber town of over 2,000 popu-
lation, has been entirely wiped out by
flames. The fire caught on the outskirts

Hatton’s big warehouse. The fire started
about 2 o’clock, and in four hours the
Forest fires have been raging all through
northern Wisconsin, causing the hot air to
sweep this section like hot winds from the
desert. VVashburn had a close shave, and
fire has made a heavy sweep in and about
White river. It is likely to sweep on south
and burn millions of feet of standing pine.
It was only a year ago that Iron River was
entirely destroyed by fire. The town has
just completed a system of waterworks.
Several people were brought to Ashland
who had been badly injured, narrowly es-
caping with their lives. A bad fire is rag-
ing at North York. Ten cars on the siding
burned. A special train was sent out for
help to fight the flames and save the
trestles and bridges along the railroads.
Two Killed in 1; Drunken Brawl.
der occurred at Edgerton, this county, last
night. A row occurred in a saloon, and
soon the entire population, crazed with
drink, participated. Pistols were used
freely, and soon Hugh Coy was shot and
instantly killed and Sam Boyer lay on the
ground with his throat cut. The jugular
vein was severed, and he died in thirty
minutes. The cut was made with a razor.
Mrs. Boyer, his wife, was shot in the arm
and severely wounded. All the partici-
pants fled across the state line into Ohio.
Bad. Breaks in Louisiana. Levees.
NEW ORLEANS, June 19.—Aoout7 o’clock
last night two breaks occurred on the
east side of the Mississippi, one above, the
other below the city. The former from
present indications will prove as disastrous
as the famous Nita crevasse. It is about
forty-seven miles above New Orleans, di-
rectly in front of St. Petersburg settle-
ment. The water will flood a vast area of
land under cultivation. The breach is
Widening very rapidly. The people have
begun to remove to places of safety.
Hope for Banker Claassen.
BUFFALO, June 19.—It is said that the
case of General Peter J. Claasseu, the New
York banker, responsible for the failure of
the Sixth Avenue bank, of that city, is to
be reopened with the consent of Attorney
General Olney. Claassen was sentenced
to six years’ imprisonment in March, 1891,
and has since been an inmate of the Erie
county penitentiary. He has been an 00-
cupant of the hospital for months and it is
probable the effort now making will result
in a pardon.
Fatal Riots in Austria. .
VIENNA, J nne 19,—Five thousand work-
men, in defiance of a police prohibition,
held a meeting in favor of uniVersal suf-
frage at Weissenberge, outside of Breunn
yesterday. In a fight with police a com-
missary of police was killed and five po-
licemen critically injured. Twenty-six
workingmen were wounded. At a similar
meeting in Prague thirteen policemen
and fourteen workmen were wounded and
one workman killed.
Armenian Rioters Sentenced to Death.
CONSTANTINOPLE, June 19.—-The trial of
Armenians accused of being concerned in
rioting at Cesarea and Marsovan last
spring has just been concluded at Angora.
Seventeen, including Professor Thoumaian
and Professor Kayayan, were condemned
to death; six, including the Protestant pas-
tor at Gimeric, get fifteen years imprison-
ment; eighteen are sent to prison for from
seven to ten years, and fifteen acquitted.
Fatally Shot by a. Boy.
HARRISBURG, June 19.—Frank Swanger,
aged 17, is dying from a bullet wound in
the head. On his way to work he stopped
at a stable, where a. small colored boy
picked up a. gun, and while fooling with it
the piece was discharged, the bullet strik-
ing Swanger in-the head. Physicians think
he cannot recover. The colored boy was
arrested and subsequently released.
Suicide from Brooklyn Bridge.
NEW YOIiK, June 19.———An unknown man,
apparently about 26 years old, jumped
from the north roadway of the Brooklyn
bridge last night and landed upon the
river. He was instantly killed. From
papers found on the person of the dead
man it is supposed that he was John J.
Mulbrenen, of Boston.
