early in 1857 or late in 1856 he was given
an ovation.
Then he returned to_ the east, and ap-
peared with success in Boston as Sir Giles
Overreach. In New York immediately
afterward he was fairly started on the
high road to fame and fortune by his in)-
ersonattons of Richard III, Shylock, King
at, Hamlet, Brutus and other roles.
It was about this time that he met Mary
Devlin, a southern girl of great beauty
and an actress of extraordinary talent.
They were married in New York July 7,
1860. She immediately retired from the
stage. They ivere ideally happy. Booth
next assayed a season in London without
great success, and returned to New York
in 1862 to begin his series of representa
tions at the Winter Garden theater, which
established him as the greatest living
American actor. His “Hamlet” ran for
more than "100 nights—a measure of suc-
cess at that time. unheard of. In 1863 his
young wife died, and for a time he aban-
doned his profession.
In 1864—65 Booth again appeared in New
York as Hamlet. April 17 of the latte]
year the assassination of President Lin.
coln by John Wilkes. his brother, startled
the world and engulfed him in a sea of
grief and wretchedness. He quit the stage
on the very night of the tragedy, intending
never to return to it, but the importunities
of his friends were so earnest that Jan. 30.
1866, he again stepped on the stage. His
appearance behind the footlights was the
signal for nine great cheers which fairly
shook the theater. But never since that

cess Eulalia soon showed everybody at the
Palmer House on her arrival yesterday

reaching the parlor floor by one of the
ladies’ elevators she walked straight ahead
to the gorgeous reception room which
forms the ante chamber to the more pri-
vate apartment placed at the disposal of
the royal visitor and her suite. 'She did
not wait for Mayor Harrison to show her
the way. She has all the dash and spright-
liness and vivacity of an American woman
abroad. After a few' formal remarks the
mayor left the infant-a to the seclusion of
her apartments. She felt so fatigued, in

Booth was the central figure of a series of
magnificent productions at the Wintei
Garden. When that theater was destroyed
by fire he erected the famous Booth’s thea-
fter. The revivals of “Romeo and Juliet,"
“Richelieu,” “Julius Caesar” and othei
great tragedies on its stage mark an epoch
in the history of the American drama, but
they bankrupted the man who gave them
to the public. After his failure Mr. Booth
found himself nearly $1,000,000 in debt.
This vast indebtedness he has since paid,
dollar for dollar, with interest. '
The death of his second wife was the cul-
mination of a long series _of domestic anx-
ieties. He made another and phenomenally
successful professional visit to England,
and also scored a triumph in Germany.
His tours with Lawrence Barrett began
during the season of 1887—8. From both a
financial and artistic standpoint they were
wonderfully satisfactory. The profits on
one season were more than $300,000. In
1889 this connection of the two great
