10 o'clock on Thursday morning and will

West Fifty-sixth street, then driven to the
Hotel Savoy, where the mayor and com-
mittee of one hundred will be ready to re-
ceive her. On Friday a visit to the insti-
tutions on Ward’s and Blackwell’s Island
will be made. On Saturday the committee
will take the princess on an excursion to
West Point,where the cadets are preparing
to suitably entertain the party. The Colon
, Cervantes ball will take place in the even-
mg.
On Monday, May 29, the princess will
accept an invitation from Genera1.E.Burd
Grubb, ex—minister to Spain, to attend a
reception at his country place in Taxedo.
On Tuesday, Decoration Day, the infants.
will review the parade from the Hotel
Savoy, and in the afternoon attend a re-
ception, at which only the committee Of
one hundred will be presented. She will
attend a concert in the evening. Next
day she will view an exhibition by the fire
department and afterward visit the Nor-
mal college.
Chinese Waiting‘to Enter.
WASHINGTON, May 23.—Assistant Secre-
tary Hamlin has been informed of the ar-
rival at Portland, Ore., of the steamer
Danube, which plies between Chinese and
American ports, with 500 Chinese on
board. Smallpox was reported as being
prevalent among the Chinese. Mr. Hamlin
has instructed the collector at Portland to
confer with Dr. Stoner, the health officer,
and see to it that the quarantine regula-
tions were strictly observed, and also to
the law as to entry into this country of
Chinese. .

Glass Works Close Down.
MILLVILLE, N. J .,‘May 23.—The window
glass works of the Cumberland Glass com-
pany, at Bridgeton, have closed down.
These are the first works to go out of blast
in the east this season. A number of Mill-
ville and Bridgeton blowers. are thrown
out of work. It is said that the window
glass factories all over the country will
shut down for the customary summer stop
earlier than usual this year.
Trouble Over a Game of Cards.
NEW YORK, May 23.—Saubeen Luntes,
an Italian, of Jersey City, lies in the city
hospitalin a critical condition, suffering
from a stab wound inflicted in the left
breast with a stiletto in the hands of Do-
menta Luente. Luntes’ condition is so
precarious that Luente is held without
bail. The murderous assault was the out-
come of a game of cards.
Writs Quashed.
TRENTON, May 23.—The writs issued re-
cently in Union county for the arrest of
Michael T. Dwyer, George Morgan and
Elizabeth track, have been quashed by.
Judge Depue, of the supreme court, who
declares that the writs were illegally is-
sued, not coming withing the statutes for
their regulation. ’
To Investigate Mrs. Adair’s Death.
NEW YORK. May 23.—The case of Mrs.
Margaret Adair, who, it is alleged, was
Flatbush, will be taken up by the grand
jury- Dr. Edward Freel, who held the
_ autopsy on the body, said that the ribs
that had been broken had begun to heal,
so they could not have been broken after
death.
A New York Bank in Trouble.
NEW YORK, May 23.—The Bank of De-
posit, at 195 Broadway, is in trouble. The
bank cleared through the Seaboard bank
and acted as correspondent in this city for
the Dwiggins’ chain of financial institu-
tions in the west. It is stated that the
Clearing House association will not per-
mit the Bank of Deposit to fail.
, Two Government Officials Resign.
WASHINGTON, May 23.—Attorney Gen-
eral Olney has received the resignation of
A. E. Buck, United States marshal for the
Northern district of Georgia. He has also
W. E. Craig, United States attorney for
the Western district of Virginia, to take
effect on June 30. ‘
Tried to Wreck a Train.
BRIDGETON, N. J ., May 23.—Oil barrels,
railroad plate iron and other obstructions
were placed on the track of the New J er-
sey Central railroad, between the Roads-
town and Shiloh crossings, but was dis-
covered in time by the engineer to stop the
train due here from Bay Side at 7:40.

' ALBANY, May 23.—Commander Joseph
P. Cleary, of the state department of the
Grand Army of the Republic, has issued
an order disbanding Noah L. Farnham
post, of New York city, which has a mem-
bership of 252 persons, for a violation of
the'rules of the organization.
Arrested for Smuggling.
NEW YORK, May 23.—Michael Driscoll,
anoiler on board the Cunard steamship
Etruria, was arrested on complaint of
Custom House Officer Richard Walldeck,
who charges him with smuggling. Twelve
dozen pairs of kid gloves were found on
his person.

ment is being made by the old First army

vetoed the sugar bounty bill passed by the
recent legislature. He gives as his reasons

of usurpation of power in passing the

A Battle with the Roslyn Robbers.
TACOMA, Wash, May 23.—A break for
liberty was made by the alleged Roslyn
robbers, George McCarthy and Ras Lewis,
alias Diamond Dick, in Ellensburg jail.
When the robbers had escaped a battle oc-
curred in the streets between them and
citizens by whom they were recognized. in
which both robbers and one citizen were
wounded. The marshal finally captured
them and took them back to jail.
Arrested for Bigamy.
ATLANTIC CITY, May 23.—Mrs. Caroline
Jones Cannon has caused the arrest of her
husband, Jacob Cannon, on the charge of
bigamy. Several years ago Jones married
a woman in Baltimore,.but through some
cause has not been living with her. Last
December he met his present wife in this
city andumarried her.

A $200,000 Fire in St. Louis.’
ST. LOUIS, May 23.—Fire at midnight
destroyed the brick block at the corner of
Channey avenue and Locust street, occu-
pied by the C. M. Crumm Livery company.
Willie Quinn, a 7-year-old boy,was burned
to death. One hundred and fifty horses
were also cremated. Loss, $200,000.
