After Twenty Years a Tramp Confesses

I BANGOR, Me., April 29.~'———Twenty years
ago Daniel Morrison, a wealthy sportsman
from Ohio, was murdered and robbed in a
hunting camp near Moosehead lake. His
guide, whom he had dismissed a few days
before, was arrestede but proved an alibi.
The murdered man’s relatives and the
authorities made all possible efforts to dis.
cover the 'guilty person but failed. A letter
has just been received here containing the
information that a man named Markham
died a few weeks ago in Bonanza. City,
Idaho. On his death bed he confessed that
he killed Morrison. He said he was out ol
money and tried to rob Morrison. In the
struggle that ensued he killed him. He
escaped into Canada, and then went west,
._ncver returning to this part of the country.
HARRIS’ CASE HEARD.
The Commissioner Takes Testimony. in
Relation to Helen Potts.
NEW YORK, April 29.—l\IOst of the wit-
nesses called yesterday in the hearing be-
fore Commissioner Raines in the Carlyle
Harris case testified that they had had
Opportunities for observing and had never
noticed that Helen Potts took morphine.
Others declared that they wousld. not be-
lieve under oath Dr. Kiiimoutfh’, the As-
bury Park druggist who said he 'had sold
her morphine. Mrs. Potts denied that she
had ever said she hoped Harris would not
be executed. She also declared that-Helen
had never refused to go home declaring
that it was a “hell upon earth.” Miss
Jackson, the seminary: principal, con-
tradicted her. The hearing will probably
be concluded today.
Bitter Legal Fight Ended.
TRENTON, April 29.—-Two years ago
Harry Kern and Rachel Johnson, of At-
lantic City, were married. Kern was a
business man, who at one time lived in
Philadelphia, and his bride was highly rc-
spectable. Almost immediately after the
marriage Kern was placed in an insane
asylum, and his brother Frank was ap-
pointed his guardian. Frank began pro-
ceedings against Harry’s wife and Rev.
John Payran, the minister who performed
the ceremony. He wanted the marriage
annulled on the grounds that Harry was
mentally incapable of choosing a wife. The
fight was a bitter one, and Vice Chancellor
Green has decided that the marriage was
legal.
Ocean Penny Postage Discussed.
LONDON, April 29.—Gcrald E. W. Loder,
Conservative—for Brighton, made a motion
in the house of coninio‘ns for ocean penny
postage. He spoke at length in favor of
reducing to one penny the postal tariff for
letters passing from one British colony to
another and bethcn any British colony
and the mother country. Arnold Morley,
postmaster general, Mr. Gladstone and
Sir William Harcourt, chancellor of the
exchequer, expressed their approval of the
principle of the motion, but maintained
that financial considerations made the
change impossible at present. The inotion
was withdrawn.

Burneston, a fisherman, was shot and in-
stantly killed by his brtoher, John N.

got the gun, when a second: barrel was
discharged, accidentally, he says, and

Judgment for Boatbuildcrs.
WASHINGTON, April 29.—Thc court of
claims has rendered judgment for $91,072
in favor of Snowdcné‘a Mason, of Brons-
ville, Pa., who in le'Ll built the ironclad
monitor Manajunk. The plans of the
vessel were modified so as to provide for
- the enlargement. of the vessel after the
contract was made for which the claim for
additional compensation was made.
