Fire at Kawagoe.
SANFRANCIsco, April 17.—The steamer
China arrived from Hong Kong via Hono-
lulu, brin g advices from Hong Kong to
,March 23, 'okohama March 29 and Hono-
lulu April '8. There were 589 Chinese
among the China’s passengers, a large
number of Whom are bound .for the
World’s fair to be part of the inhabitants
'of the Chinese village. Another installment
next vessel due from the Orient. A num-
ber of the China’s Chinese are in transit
for Havana and Panama and some are for
this port.
One solitary remnant of the seventy fish-
ing boats recently carried away off Qttaru,
Japan, in agalc has turned up. A te ‘ ram
received by the government- states that one
of the boats drifted ashore on March 0,
and as nothing is said of “any survivors
being in the beat it is presumed that the
occupants had been drowned. OF the
other sixty-nine boats no news has been
received. .
Koer—Maru, a steamer owned by the
Hokkai Steamship company, of l-Iokzxzin. :a.
sailed from Otaru on March 14, and the
following day fOundered in Yakijiri s :I
Seventy~two persons were drowned
Two thousand houses were destroyed by
fire at Kawagoe, Japan. Many people were
injured but no lives were lost.
According to a Tokio paper alnrge batch
of Japanese women is to be shipped to
Chicago for immoral purposes. The num—
ber intended to be sent overfiis said to ex-
ceed 300. The police‘ will try to prevent
the shipment of the girls.
The Clayton Assassination.
LITTLE ROCK, April 17.—A. J. VVernc-r,
the officer who came from Butte, Mont,
with Sheriff ‘Vhite, Hickey, the alleged
murderer of Clayton, and informer Burk-
hardt arrived here from Lutherville, Ark.
Mr. \Verner believes that Burkhardt is so
unreliable that he will be Yunableto pro-
duce any evidence that will clear the mys-
tery. The stenographer who reported the
proceedings of the preliminary examina-
tion for W. H. H. Clayton has returned
read it over carefully, reaching the cflon—
clusion that it would take-stronger evi-
dence than that given by Burkhardt to
convince him that Hickey is the murderer
of his brother.
Double Murder in New Mexico.
KINGSTON, N. M., April 17.—A horrible
double murder occurred in the little Mex-
ican town of Monticello, in the northern
partlof this county. W’illiam Hardin, the
foreman of a. cattle company, was in town
.and became intoxicated. To make a dis-
play he attempted to-t-ake a six shooter
from Ed Simmons. Simmons resisted and
' a struggle ensued, when a Mexican inter-
fered and Hardin shot the Mexican. The
murderer made his escape to the moup-
tains, where he was overtaken by a mob,
captured and shot, and his body mutilated
in a horrible manner.
A Republican Marshal Beappointed.
SAN ANTONIA, Tex., April 17.—Paul
Fricke, United States marshal for the
western district of Texas. whose commis
.sion eXpired March 27, the office having
been vacant since that time, yesterday re-
ceived .a letter from Attorney General
Olney informing him of his reappoint-
ment by Justice Jackson. The appoint-
ment of Mr. Fricke to fill the temporary
vacancy has produced a sensation among
the Democrats, as they regard the action
of Attorney General Olney to indicate it
will probably be several months beforea
permanent appointment is made of a
Democrat.
Passenger Steamer Blown Up.
WINAMAC, Ind., April 17.—The boiler of
the passenger steamer Nellie Bly, owned
by J. F. Fishtorn & 00., while making a
trip down the river yesterday afternoon,
blew up, seriously injuring eight persons.
Machine shops, of this city, had both legs
broken and crushed and was severely in-
jured internally. None Of ‘the passengers
escaped injury. The boat was entirely de-
molished and sank immediately after the
explosion. .
Proposed Monster Labor Union.
CHICAGO, April 17.—The men who for
several days have-been laboring on the
formation of the American Railway union
have issued a lengthy document setting
forth the outline of one of the greatest
labor organizations the world has ever
seen. The union proposes to enlist as far
as possible all railway employes of every
description, and its avowed Object is the
abolishment of the strike and boycott and
the eradication oflheavy taxes and dues.
Damages the Result of a Flirtation.
SHELBYVILLE, Ind., April 17.—The jury
has returned a verdict for $5,000 in favor
of the estate of J. 'M. Jack, against the
Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton railroad.
Jack was killed 'by a. passing train at
Fountaintown. Two young girls testified
that at the time he was struck they were
flirting with the engineer, who was neg-
lecting his duty. -
An Interesting CeremOny.
CHICAGO, April 17.—An unusual cere-
mony, one that has never taken place out-
side Of Turkey, will be the dedication of
the Turkish mosque in the Midway Plais-
unce Friday, April 38. The ceremonies
will be conducted under the auspices of
the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the
Mystic Shrine.

ST. PAUL, April 17. — Representative
Markham was informed at the house of
representatives that he had been indicted
by the Minneapolis grand jury on charges
of making improper use of money to in-
fluence action in the Wyman log scaling
bill.‘

LONDON, April 17.—The new steamer
Campania is said to have made twenty
. Iaeven miles an hour on her trial trip. This
is the fastest time ever made. She was
built on the Clyde, andis scheduled to

Mexican, making in all five in the last ten
days. About a. week ago Spence, who is a
