A MYSTERY No LONGER.
Thomas Basnett Confesses That He Fired
His House and Shot Himself.

, Basnett and the burning of his house at
South Vineland on Monday morning last
Was cleared up yesterday afternoon when
an ofl‘icer from Vineland visited the old
man and obtained from him a confession
that he had fired the house and shot him-
self. He said that the sudden death of
James P. Tryner, his next door neighbor
and the only friend he had in the world,
had made him despondent. The first shot
did not have the desired effect, so he fired
another without fatal result. By that
time the flames from the burning build-
ing had become so warm that he crawled
out of the house.
“I acknowledge,” said he to the officer,
“that I have committed a crime against
God, and expect to be treated as an out-
cast hereafter.” ’
The confession of Basnett, coupled with
the fact that Dr. Leffman, the Philadel-
phia chemist, has stated that he found no
arsenic in Tryner’s stomach, clears up a
mystery that has caused more excitement
in. South Jersey than anything else for
years. _

the hotels and boarding houses on the
government reservation and every ivail-
able place of shelter within ten .nilcs of
here was taxed to its limit ye:.-' ' silay. The
tide of travel reached its limit, and hun-
dreds of persons who had come from the
east and north in hopes that quarters
might be obtained somewhere within :1
reasonable distance were unable to secure
shelter and left for their homes by boat
and train. \Vhat this place will do when
the foreign ships begin to arrive in greater
numbers next week, and when thousands
would like to be here and see the naval
pageant, is a mystery that no one mu
solve. The return of the ships yesterday
gave an impetus to social events. Last
night there was gathered in the ballroom
every officer not compelled to remain
aboard ship.
REVOLUTION IN STEEL MAKING.
Cheap Goal to Take the Place of Coke
in Its Manufacture.
ST. LOUIS, April 15.—A movement is in
progress here which it is expected will re
suit in a revolution in the manhfacturing
of steel. The Brazelle Steel and Iron com-
pany, of this city, has purchased twenty
acres of land in the suburbs upon which
they will erect immediately a plant of 100
tons capacity per day, where they propose
to manufacture pig iron at a. saving of $4
per ton and steel at a saving of $6 per ton
over any known method in use in the United
States or Europe. The process employs a
gas fuel derived from cheap coal, or
“slack,” instead of. employing coke, which
in this market costs six times the price
of bituminous coal.
He Didn’t Give Tips.
PARIS, April 15.—An amusing incident
took place at the fancy fair of Nice yester-
day. A beautiful Russian countess who
had a stall at the fair. sawa handsome
man in evening dress with large, dark
eyes and a mustache, and went up to him
for the purpose of pinning a flower in his
buttonhole. She did so, and then held out
her hand. The man smiled affably, bowed
and said: “Excuse me, mademoiselle, I
neither give tips nor take them; I am the
waiter.”
Killed Five Men in Ten Days.
PHCENIX, A. '13., April 15.—Pete Spence,
of Sentinel, on Thursday killed another
Mexican, making in all five in the last ten
days. About a week ago Spence, who is a
Texan, with no love for Mexicans on gen-
eral principles, found it necessary to kill
one while keeping a saloon at Gila Bend.
After that the Mexicans formed a combi-
nation to kill Spence, but so far he has
kept on top. All the killings, it is claimed,
have been in self defense.
A Veteran Mail Carrier’s Last Trip.
EASTON, April 15.—John L. Snyder, mail
carrier between the postoflice and the sta-
tion at Reigelsville, died suddenly while
seated on a truck at the depot. He was late
in meeting the train, which prompted him
to hurry, and became overexerted. He was
76 years old. - .

NEW YORK, April 15. —— Theodore P.
Douglas, the Greek student who stole
books from the Astor and Columbia col-
lege libraries, was sent to the Elmira re-
formatory on his plea of guilty to grand
larceny in the second degree.
