CHICAGO, April 11,—Thirty-five hundred
Workman employed On the \Vorld’s fair
buildings yesterday quit work in obedience
to orders from the building trades council.
It was the culmination of much contro-
versy over what is claimed to be an agree-
ment between the World’s fair officials
and the representatives of union labor, by
which all disputes between employers and
employee on exposition work were to be
settled by arbitration. The men contend
that some of the exposition officials have
recently shown a disposition, now that the
fair is nearly completed, to deny point
blank anything asked, and that this has
notably been the case in the carpenters’
work of the exposition and would conse-
quently be glad to Tame the settlement of
the fair officials . appoint one man, while
they would do the same, the two to select
a third and all three to act as a board of
arbitration. The proposition was rejected.
’1‘ 1e strike was amicably settled last
night at a meeting of the council of ad-
ministration with the executive committee
of the building trades council. The whole
trouble is settled so far as the exposition
company is concerned, but there are, how-
ever, several contractors on the grounds
who must sign the agreement before their
men will return to work. There were
2,000 men who did not return to work this
morning. A committee is at work en-
deavoring to get these contractors to Sign
the agreement, which will put these men
at work and enable the great enterprise to
be pushed to an early completion.
The session of the two committees was a.
long one, and both sides of the trouble
were thoroughly discussed. Director of
Works Burnham proved to President Rus-
sell, of the building trades council, that
the trouble to arbitration. They asked that _

dies, but Rutherford remained to be treated

their presence does not interfere with its
progress. The men agree that there shall
be no further trouble on any account be—
tween this timc and the close of the fair.
The result is considered a decided victory
for the fair officials.

RED BANK, N. J., April 11.—A shooting
match was held on the Riverside club’s
grounds yesterday afternoon between Phil
Daly, J r., and E. ll. (“Snapper”) Garrison.
The match was for $500 a side and was at
