Tendency to Ron- der theAct Nugatory. 1 WASHINGTON, April 10.—Senator Chand- ler, chairman of the senate committee on immigration, has addressed a letter to Secretary Carlislc, calling attention, to What he regards as a violation of the letter as well as the spirit of the law, as disclosed agent of several steamship companies, prescribing the form of manifests required by the treasury department to be fur- nished by steamship companies under the act of 'March 3, 1893. According to Mr. fests, containin g the names of .thirty.per- sons each, can be pasted together and the captain and surgeon of the vessel need swear to their truthfulness but once, in- stead of to each manifest separately, as provided by law. Lewis county, Ky., which is situated on the hi0 river, seventy-five miles above Cincinnati, says that fires in the forests in that county broke out, and have spread over the whole county. From Clarksville, in Lewis county, to Sugar Loaf mountain, the whole county is one vast sea of flames. Fences have been destroyed everywhere, and many farmers have been burned out of their homes. It was openly charged that corrupt means had been used to pass the PeterSon bill, and that Governor Nelson had held a possible veto of the capitol bill over the heads of the St. Paul members in order to force them to vote for the grain bill. Death of a French Admiral. PARIS, April 10.——Admiral Paris died yesterday, aged '77 years. He entered the navy in 1820, became ensign in 1826, lieu- tenant in 1832, captain in 1845, rear ad- miral in 1858 and vice admiral in 1864.
