TWO MORE BANKS Go DOWN.

Consternction in Nashville Financial Cir-
cles in Consequence.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 28.—Follow-
ing the failure of the First Commercial
Bank on Saturday two more banks closed
their doors yesterday, the Mechanics’
Savings Bank and the Bank of Commerce.
The first has a capital stock of $500,000
and the other $250,000. '

 

The greatest consternation prevailed in'

financial circles in consequence, and it
was intensified by the expectation that
two oth'er'banks would be compelled to
shut down before the close of business
yesterday afternoon.

Over $3,000,000 is involved in the fail-
ure of the three banks, and at least a
dozen small banks in adjacent towns are
in temporary financial straits.

ROUGH ON THE PRINCE.

Gets Three- Months' Imprisonment for
Selling Old Masters.

ROME, March 28.—Maffeo Barberini Co-
lonna di Sciarra, Prince of Carbagnano,
has been sentenced to three months’ im-
prisonment and to pay a fine of 6,250 lire
for having sold works of the old masters
to persons outside of Italy without the
consent of the Government. The pictures
were in the gallery of the Palais Sciarra
inrRome when the Government prohibit<
ed the sale of such works to foreigners.
They were taken secretly from the palace,
were smuggled over the border into
France, and were bought by Parisians.
The Prince is 43 years old.

JULES FERRY’S SUGGESSOR.

Challemcl-Lacour Elected President of the
French Senate.

PARIS, March 28.—-The Senate elected
M. Challemel-Lacour, the statesman and
writer, and member of the Academy and
Senator from Bouches-du-Rhone, Presi-
dent of the Senate in place of Jules Ferry,
deceased.

The election is very satisfactory to
President Carnot and the supporters of
the Government, and is all the more
popular on account of the recent election

in the French Academy.

 

Abington May Have: Left Two Wills.

LONDON, March 28,—The caveat entered
at Somerset House against Squire Abing-
ton Baird’s will, in official language, has
been “wormed” from two separate quar-
ters. This indicates that the complain-
ants who entered the caveat must show
cause before the Register why this or

, that will should not be proved. The evi-

dence points to more than one will.

 

No News of the Naronio's Crew.
.LONDON, March 28.-—Repeated efforts

' have been made to gain further iniOrma- ,

tion concerning the vessel which signal-
ed off Deal on March 20 that she had 33
board 11 shipwrecked sailors. The 'hope
has been that the sailors were from. the
missing steamship Naronic. Nothing
more can be ascertained as to the vessel
or the sailors.

Fullerton’s Strange Disappearance.

LONDON, March 28.———A great sensation
has been caused insporting circles by the
inexplicable disappearance of the famous
racer and winner of the Waterloo Cup,
Fullerton. The horse was taken from
the stables of Col. North at Eltham on
Saturday and has not since been found.

Germany Heading Oil'Fruncc and England.

BERLIN, March 28.———A private expedi-
tion, indorsed by the Emperor, is being
prepared by Princess Hohonlche Langen-
burg,with the object of acquiring for
Germany the Hinterland,_on the Came-
roons, Upper Guinea, to which France
and England have laid 0131111.
