DES MOINEs, Ia., March 23.—The Regis-
ter has just received the following dis-
patch from Albia: A brutal and shock-
ing tragedy occurred at Hiteman, a min-
ing town hear this place, yesterday morn-
ing. [William Frasier was a drunken
miner, living with his family, consisting
of his wife and one babe, at Carbondale.
A few days ago, on account of Frasier’s
drunkenness and abuse, his wife, taking
her babe, left him and went to Hiteman
to stay with her sister, Mrs. Smith.
Tuesday evening Frasier came to this
place and Went to Hiteman early' yester-
day morning. Immediately after arriv-
ing there he inquired for the residence of
Mrs. Smith, and, being informed, Went
immediately" to the house, walked in,
and, without a word," plunged his knife
into his wife’s heart, killing her almost
instantly.
Mrs. Smith, hearing the disturbance in
the room, was coming from the kitchen,
when Frasier, with the cry of a demon,
sprang upon her, driving his knife to the
hilt in her breast. She died in a few mo-
ments.
Not having enough Of his fiendish
work, he then proceeded to torture and
mutilate his own babe of a few months
old, nearly severing one leg from the
body andbadly cutting the child other-
wise.
Neighbors, hearing the disturbance,
rushed in, and Frasier immediately made
for the woods. The enraged citizens
went in hot pursuit. After about two
hours of exciting chase Frasier was cap-
tured about two miles from here, with-
out the least resistance, by Joe Box, Joe
Lewis and a Mr. Grice. He was turned
over to the Sheriff and posse, who had
gone from here to bring him to this
place. ,
The Sheriff put Frasier in a light
wagOn and started for Albia with all
speed possible, when they were overtaken
by an infuriated mob of miners, who
compeLIOd the Sheriff to surrender the
prisoner to them. The officers did all in
their power to save the man, but to no
effect.
Frasier was taken to Hiteman and made
to look upon his bloody work, and then
promptly hung to the limb of a tree near
town.
N O motive is given for the crime, ex-
cept the. Inner caused by his wife leaving
him. The. c 1.!d’s chances of recovery are
pronounced ly surgeons as very good.

NEW HAVEN, Lt, March 23.—Michael
J. Scnnlon has been sued for breach of
promise by Miss Mary Murphy of Farm-
ington. Miss Murphy is 18 years old and
very pretty. She met SeanlOn, who
formerly lived in New Haven, in Union-
Ville in 1890.
In September of the same year Scanlon
went West, butwrote to the girl contin-
ually. On December 7, 1891, they became
engaged. He has continued to corres-
pond with Miss Murphy, although he
was married to another woman in April,
1892. Miss Murphy discovered this a
short time ago. He offered to pay her
$3,080 in settlement, but the girl refused
the offer. Scunlon is wealthy. The case
will be tried in Lines, (101., near Denver,
Where Scanlon is living. _ .

‘ This Morning.
NEW YORK, March 23.—Carlyle Harris
was taken to Sing Sing Prison, 'to await
the execution of the death sentence, early
this morning. The exact time of his de-
parture had been kept secret, in order
that the crowds which would un-
doubtedly assemble to see him might be
misled, and balked in their curiosity.
Harris spent his last day at the Tombs
in practical seclusion compared with the
last few days, during which he has re-
ceived and talked with an almost con-
stant stream of reporters and other Visi-
tors.

An Old Man’s Vigor Returns \Vith Bil
Second Childhood.
WELCH, W. Va... March 23.—In the
lower end of this county there lives a man
by the name 0! Whorton, 86 years of age,
who has entered second childhood in a
remarkable way. His hair and beard,
which for years have been white as cot-
ton, are turning black again. He is cut-
ting two jaw teeth.
His eyes are assuming their youthful
luster and his vigor is that of a man of
40. Mr. Whorton says he feels as young
as he did at 30.
Killed His Neighbor’s “’if‘e.
YORK, Pa., March 28.-—At Stoverstown,
eight miles from this city, Daniel
Hamme, a married man, shot and fatally
wounded a married woman named Glat-
felter, and then killed himself. The
tragedy took place in Mrs. Glatfelter’s
home, her husband and a number of
neighbors being present.
Suicide of a Chronic Invalid.
NEw HAVEN, Ct.,, March 23.—Reuben
L. Roy of Cheshire died at Grace Hos-
pital yesterday from the effects of an
Overdose of morphine. Roy Was 64 years
of age and a chronic invalid. He went
into the dispensary and got the .mor~
phine without being detected. ~
Warden Durston in Doubt.
ADBURN, N. Y., March 23.—Warden
Durston of Auburn prison declares he
has not made up'his mind to accept the
offer to go to Sing Sing, and will not de-
cidc the question until next month.

Result of the English ’Varsity Four Mile
Race for 1893.
LONDON, March 23.—The great Eng-
lish ’Varsity boat race, four miles over
"the Putney-Mortlake course, was decided
yesterday. The tide was running strong;
ly and there was a slight wind. The
boats started at 4.35 p. m. Oxford won
the race by two and a half lengths from
Cambridge. Time, 18 minutes 47 seconds,
the best ever made over the course.
It was the fiftieth annual race between
the eight-oured crews of the two great
Universities. Thousands of people wit-
nessed it, but many were unable to at-
tend, through the race taking place on
Wednesday, instead of on Saturday, as
usual.
Schaef'er May Play Again.
CHICAGO, March 23. —- The injury to
Billiardist Schaefer’s arm is not so bad as
was at first reported. The great player
fell down stairs at his home Monday
night and broke the small bones of his
arm in the fall, but his wrist was not
hurt. If the bones knit—and the chances
are greatly in favor of this—Schaefer will
in the course of a few months be able to
play his game as of old. .
Merritt Will Catch for Boston.
BOSTON, March 23.—The Boston Base
Ball management has signed a new
cétcher in the person of William H. Mer-
ritt of Lowell, Mass. He was formerly
with the Louisville and Chicago Clubs.

SUMMIT, N. J., March 23.—The wife of
Benjamin Bock, who lives at Union, on

dragged her out of bed by the hair of the
head and severely beat her, and that
when one of the neighbors Came to her'
