GLEN‘s FALLS, March 21.-—-A. C. Clif-
ton of Island Harbor, opposite the Wal-
tonian ‘group of islands, Lake George,
While shoveling dirt taken from an exca-
vation over which an ice-house was built
last Fall,.discovered a number of bright
particles. He gathered a half bushel of
earth and sorted it. The particles vary
in size from a pin head to that of a grain
of wheat. He has had the metal assayed,
and it yielded 90 per cent. of pure gold.
The amount taken from the hull bushel
of earth weighs, in value, exactly $33. A
thorough examination will be made as
soon as the snow and ice melt. It is
Rossblc that there may be a true fissure
vein in the vicinity. It is stated that the
precious metal has been found in the

- The third week of the extraordinary
session of the Senate opened with a large
attendance of Senators and spectators.
The first action taken was to fix the next
day of meeting lcr Wednesday. Then came
the presentatbn of the credentials of
Senator Allen, apsointed by the Governor
of the State of Washington. They were
read and laid on the table.

The numerous errors that have come to
light in the enrollment of the great ap-
propriation bills at the last session formed
the subject of discussion for nearly an
hour of the time that the Senate was in
session. More than 9) such errors were

yesterday on an order issued by Judge
Vann for contempt. The order is that he
pay Mrs. Hannah Stevens upward of $7,-
000. Griffith is a deacon and superin-
tendent of the Plymouth Church Sun-
day-school. Mrs. Stevens is one of three
heirs of David Evans, New York, who
died intestate in 1884. She put the col-
lection of her interest in Griffith’s hands.
It is alleged that be retained part of the
money he collected.

Impaled on a. Hot Iron.

PITTSBURG, Pa., March 21. —— Henry
Pomering, an employ‘e at the Pennsyl-
vania Tube Works, was sending a: bar of
red-hot iron through the rolls, when it
slipped from the tongs and struck him in
the stomach. He seized the bar with his
hand, burning his fingers to a crisp as he
struggled in vain to free himself. Fellow
workmen took him 'from the bar, which
had penetrated his stomach. He was
taken to the Homoeopathic Hospital,
where he will die. ’

An Office Cleveland Must Fill.

TRENTON, N. J., March 21.—}Iew Jersey

is without aUnited States Marshal. Y’es‘
terday at noon the term of Budd Deacon
expired and he and his deputies moved
out. There is‘no provision for the Man
shal holding OVer after his term expires.

' There is no one to serve processes, and

the business of the United States Court
in the State is at a standstill. The Dem-
ocrats are quarre'ling among themselves
over Mr. Deacon’s successor.

 

No Bail for Hugh Dempsey.

PHILADELPHIA, March 21,—The Su-
preme Court refused to grant the peti-
tion to admit Hugh F. Dempsey, who
stands under conviction and sentence in
the Court of Oyer and Terminer of Alle-
gheny county on the charge of felonious
and aggravated assault and battery for
an alleged attempt to poison the work-
men at Homestead.

Professor of Business Practice.

PHILADELPHIA, March 21.-—-Josoph
French Johnson of Spokane Falls, Wn.,
has been elected professor of business
practice in the Wharton School of Fi-
nance and Economy at the University of
Pennsylvania. Prof. Jackson, who is 40
years of age, was born at Hardwick,
Mass., and was graduated from Harvard
in_187$.
