Trials.

 

PARIS, March 16.—-Yielding to pressure
on the part of his colleagues, M Bour-
geois will reassume the office of Minister
of Justice, which he resigned in order to
answer the charges made by Mme. Cottu,
and which he regarded as reflecting upon
him. ,

There was but a. small attendance'at
the trial of Charles de Lesseps and his
fellow-defendants in the Assize Court.

Counsel resumed their addresses. M.
Lagesse contended that the Government
hadshrunk from proceeding against all
the offenders cencerned in the case, and
he argued vehemently that the scandal
would not cease until the whole truth
would be revealed. M. Rousselle spoke
in a similar tons. , .
i’l‘he Advocate- General delivered an

earnest address in behalf of the prosecu-
tion, and energetically defended the
course Of the authorities.
that the Government had done the best it
could to bring everything to light, find
he denounced Charles de Lesseps as hav-
ing used artifices to throw dust in the
eyes of thejury in a similar manner to his
use of artifice to obtain subscribers to the
Panama lottery bonds. . The Adeclu-
General contended that the evidence con-
firmed the guilt of the defendants.

He justifie'd the Coursewhich de Fre’y-
cinet, Floquet, and Clemenceau had pur-
sued, and maintained that the charge
made by Charles de _Lessjcps that M. Flo-
quet had demanded money from him
was untrue. The speaker then turned his
attention to Fontane and Blondin, both
_of whom he denounced in strong terms.
He then declared that the explanation
made by Sans Leroy that he had reinvest-
ed 200,000f. of 4 his wife’s dowry at just
the time he was charged with having ac-
cepted that sum from the canal company
for changing his vote on the Panama
Lottery Bonds bill Would not hold water.

The Advocate-General demanded that
the defendants, Deputy Dugue de la.
Fuuconnerie and fex-Deputy Gobron,
should have the punishment, meted out
to them as would be .impOsed upon
Charles de Lesseps, . _ ,

M. Gobron "arose 'and' declared that
proofs of his st'at’ements'and of his inno-
cence would be found in documents that
had been placed under seal.

The Advocate-General replied that
every-thin" M. Gobron. could bring for-
ward would be duly considered. He then
reviewed the testimony of Antonin
Proust, whose first denials of the charges
against him had been equivalent to a
confession of guilt. Proust, he said, like
Gobron and Dugiue de la Fauconnerie,
h‘ad yielded to the vicious methods which
the Panama Company, when driven to a'
corner, had used without hesitation to
avoid the otherwise inevitable crash.

KILLED FOR a TEST.

A Girl Strunglcd by a Fanatic Who “'ould
Raise Her From the Dead.
ST. PETERSBURG, March iii—An Ana-

baptist fanatic has been arrested in La- _

trig for having murdered a. girl of 14
years. He had been preaching before a
roomful of people in a private house con-
cerning his power to raise the dead.

At the end of his sermon he strangled
the girl, with the consent of her parents,
in order that, he might demonstrate his
pretended ability to bring her back to
life. ‘ -

After prayers and exhortations had
continued for two hours, the parents of
the girl became convinced that he was an
i'mpostor and complained to the authori-
ties.

PANAMA SCANDAL S‘UBSIDING.

Less Interest and Excitement Shown in
Paris Yesterday. .

’ PARIS, March 16.—There was a small at-
tendance yesterday at the trial of Charles
De Lesseps and his fellow defendants in
the Assize Court. Public interest appear-
ed to have waned with the close of the
testimony in the case, and the court-
room, with its diminished audience and
comparative quiet, presented a marked
contrast to the throngs and demonstra-
tions of the earlier ‘ days of the trial.
Counsel resumed their addresses.

Hermann Hildeshcim, a Manchester

The Belgian Anti-slavery society has

Australian Bank in Melbourne, which

Non Appointments.

" Hawaii.

WASHINGTON, March 16.-—The Presi-
dent yesterday sent the following nomi-
nations to the Senate:

Navy—William McAdoo of New Jersey,
to be Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

Passed Assistant Engineer Charles W.
Rae, to be Chief Engineer; Assistant En-
gineer William H. Allderdice, to be Passed
Assistant Engineer. ,

Justice—Edward B. Whitney of New
York to be Assistant Attorney-General,
vice Abraham X. Parker, resigned.

William McAdoo, the new Assistant
Secretary of the Navy, was one of the
brightest of the younger members of the
House in the Forty-eighth and Forty-
ninth Congresses. He also served in the
succeeding Congress, and stood well in
the estimation of his colleagues.

He is a good, strong and effective
speaker,.and in the last campaign his
work for the party gave him an excellent
reputation as a stump speaker. He is an
Irishman by birth, and not yet 40 years
of age. He was brought to this country
at an early age, and reared and educated
in Jersey City, where he studied law un-
der ex- Congressman Seuddcr.

He has practiced law since 1874, but
went into local and State, and then into
National politics, so that he has not ac-
quired much legal reputation.

itors, and then went into the East Room

to shake hands with a large crowd of peo-

ple.
Among his callers were a delegation of
Episcopal ministers, consisting of

Bishops Paret of Maryland, Potter of
New York, Whitaker of Pennsylvania,

Gresham, and explained that their mis-
sion was in reference to the Chinese ex-
clusion law. The law, they said, was ex-
tremely harsh and worked injury to
American interests in China. They hoped
the President would secure some modi-
fication of the act, but had no definite
ideas to advance.

Cleveland Will Not Interfere.
WASHINGTON, March Iii—The Presi-
dent has refused to interfere in the case
of Howard J. Schneider, the murderer of
his wife and brother-in-law, and the exe-
cution will take place in the jail here on
Friday.

Soretary Herbert Makes, a Call at the
Brooklyn Navy Yard. ‘

BROOKLYN, March 16.—Hon. Hilary A.
Herbert, the new Secretary of the Navy,
paid his first official visit-to the Brook-
lyn Navy Yard yesterday, and was re-
ceived with honors by Commandant
Erben, Capt. Theodore F. Kane and the
other officers stationed there. Upon en-
tering the . yard with Congressman
Coom be he was saluted with 17 guns and
the band played “Nancy Lee.”

He expressed himself as pleased with
the manner in which his predecessor,
Gen. Tracy, had managed the department.
The civil service policy introduced by the
ex-Secretnry would be continued, he on!-
nounced. Secretary Herbet added:

“I believe in building up the American

Navy and making it the best in the world. '

From year to your war vessels of modern
construction will be added, until the
American Navy of our time is brought
up to the relative place it held in the
movies of the world in 1861. we are not
going to be surpassed by any other na-
tion in the matter of fighting ships com-
mandedby American officers and‘mahned
by American creWS. That is the sense of
the people and it is an idea as indispensi-

tion was introduced in the Legislature
yesterday to impeach all the present
State Officer; and ex-Szate officers impli-
cated in fraudulent pract’c :s unearthed
by investigating committees. This would
implicate the present Secretary of State,
the Attorney-General, the Commissioner
of Public Lands and Bui dings. The
resolution want owe-r for one day.

ALBANY, N. Y., March 16.—The Annual
Supp y bill was introduced yesterday.
The total appropriations carried by this
bill are $2,600,000, an excess of about
$500,000 over last year. The greater part
of the increase comes from the larger
amounts called for by the State hospitals.
There is appropriated for the St. Law-
rence Hospital alone the sum of $296,000,
and for the Buffalo Hospital $150,000. The
bill was made a special order in the As‘
sem bly, on second and third reading, for

Committed Suicide by Shooting.

ORANGE, N. J., March 16.—.Hermance
Toby, a German saloon keeper of 44
Mitchell street, committed suicide by
shooting himself through the right
