championship pool tournament for the
new Brunswick-Balke emblem and $1,000
opened last night before 500 spectators. '
The entries included many of the ex-
champions and are as follows: Alfred de
Oro, Havana, Cuba, the present cham-
pion; Albert G. Powers, Philadelphia;
William Clea-rwatcr, Ravenna; John
Wérner, Chicago; Frank Sherman, Wash-

Mitchell in Danger of Arrest.
NEW ORLEANS, March 7. —— Pugilist
03:51":on Mitchell is in danger of arrest for
his share in the Sullivan-Kilrain fight at
Richburg, Miss., in July, 1889. The Cres-
cent City Club has guaranteed him im-
munity from arrest and will fight any'at-
tempt to detain him.
Kelly. Must Play in New York.
NEW YORK, March 7.—Presldent Soden
of the Bostons, who ”is here for the an-
nual meeting of the National League, de-
clares that Mike Kelly must play in this
city this season or retire from the dia-
mond.
Killed by the “ Ghost ” Train.
NEW HAVEN, 01., March 7.~—James
Bailey, aged 67, a -' well-to-do farmer
of Durham, was killed last night at
the East \Vallingford crossing by the
“Ghost” train on the Air Line Division
of the Consolidated Road. Mr. Bailey at-
tempted' to drive his sleigh across the
track, unaware, presumably, of the near-
ness of the flying train. Miss Rose Bai-
ley, who was with her father, was thrown
a considerable distance, sustaining, it is
thought, a concussion of the brain.

The Hon. Elihu B. Hayes is a candidate
for the vacancy in the Seventh Massa-
chusetts—District, made by the elevation
of Henry Cabot Lodge to the Senate.
The mysterious robbery of $10,000
worth of diamonds from B. Johnson at
Omaha last November has been traced to
Edward H. Fitzgerald, now in the Kan-
sas penitentiary for forgery under the
name of Hurst.
At Chicago yesterday, Building Com-
missioner O’Neil, John York, Charles
Furst and Murderer Campbell were ar-
raigned before the Grand Jury for their
responsibility in the York disaster, in
which nine people lost their lives.
A bad rear-end collision occurred at
Pellingham, Minn. A mixed Strain was
standing at the station when a freight
train crashed into it. Mrs. Bernard of
Pellingham had just taken a seat in the
coach and was crushed to death.
As a freight train on the C. and E. road
was nearing an iron brid;e west of'Lima,
Ohio, yesterday, a car jumped the truck
and ran on to the trestle work, which
gave way and carried the 7 bridge and 17
' cars with it. . Several tramps were known
. to huvelteen on the train and have not
been soon. They are supposed to be be-

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind, March 7. ‘— Ex-
President Harrison arrived home yester-
day and was given an enthusiastic re-
private houses along the line of march,
from- the Union station to thclnew Den-
ison Hotel, were festoon'ed with flags and
bunting, and many pictures of Gen. Har-
rison were displayed. Twelve members
Of-the Reception Committee left this city
to meet Gen. Harrison and accompany
him back from a point this side of Rich-
mond. , '
The train bearing Gen. Harrison and
party arrived at the station at 11.20
o’clock. Carriages were in readiness,
the first being for the use of tax-Presi-
dent Harrison, Gov. Matthews and Gen.
Harrison’s grandson, Benjamin Harrison
McKee, also occupied this carriage, which
was preceded by the 'marching clubs, the
first of which was the Columbia Club.
The welcome home'of Gen. Harrison was
as warm as was his godspeed to Washing-
' ton four years ago. ,
As his carriage proceeded slowly up
Illinois street to Washington and thence
east to Pennsylvania street, the ex-Presi-
,dent was kept busy bowing and lifting
.Lhis hat to the cheering people along the
-:way. The procession disbanded at the
new Denison Hotel, and later ln'the after‘
noon Gen. Harrison was driven to his old
home, at 674 North Delaware street, with
Mrs. McKee and family.
Last night a general reception took
place at the State House. Gov. Matthews
delivered an address on behalf of the
State, and the Hon. 0. W. Fairbanks
spoke for the citizens of Indianapolis.

Nominations Actcd on Speedily by the
Senate Yesterday.
WASHINGTON, March 7.—At 11.50 a.m.
yesterday Maj. Pruden, the President’s
Executive Clerk, appeared upon the floor
of the Senate bearing the nominations of
the officers of President Cleveland’s Cab-
inet, as follows: '
Walter Q. Gresham of Illinois to be
Secretary of State; John G. Carlisle of
Kentucky to be Secretary of the Treasury;
Daniel S. Lamont of New York to be Sec-
rotary of War; Richard Olney of Massa-
chusetts to be Attorney- General; Wilson
S. Bissell of New York to be Postmaster-
General; Hilary A. Herbert of Alabama
to be Secretary of the Navy; Hoke Smith
of Georgia to be Secretary of the Inter-
ior; Julius Sterling Morten of Nebraska
to be Secretary of Agriculture.
was read, Mr. Pruden presented his mes-’
sage, and on motion of Senator Harris,
Dem., Tenn., the Senate went into execu-
tive session. ‘ The Cabinet nominations
were then confirmed.
The Senate afterwards adjourned until
Thursday noon.
Judge Gresham took the oath of office
as Secretary of State at the State Depart-
ment yesterday afternoon. His commis-
sion and those of the other members of
the Cabinet had been received at the
White House from the Department and
were handed by Private Secretary Thur-
ber to the President, who signed them
immediately.
Col. Crook, the Disbursing Officer and
Notary Public of the White House, ad-
ministered the oath of oflice. Acting
Secretary of State Wharton signed Judge
Gresham’s ,commission, and the latter
will perform a like office today for his as-
sociates in the Cabinet.
Sending in Their Resignations.
WASHINGTON, March 7.- W. E. Si-
monds, Commissioner of Patents, and
Assistant Commissioner Frothingham
will today send in their resignations to
the President to take effect March 31, or
whenever prior to that date, their suc-
. cessors may be appointed. Messrs. Si-
monds and Frcthingham have formed a
partnership with Col. 0. L. Burdett of
Hartford for the practice of patent law in
New York city.
The Inaugural Flrevt’orks.
WASHINGTON, March 7.'—Incidenta1 to
the inauguration festivities was the illu-
mination of the Capitol Building and
Pennsylvania avenue and the display of
fireworks on the monument grounds last
night. These were to have» taken place
Saturday night, but owing to the inclem-
ent weather they were postponed.
Eli-Secretary O’Brien Cured for.
WASHINGTON, March 7. — President
Cleveland has appointed Robert O’Brien,
who was his private secretary during .the
campaign, executive clerk at the White
House. The salary is $2,000.
Invited to Open the Fair.
WASHINGTON, March 7. —— President
Cleveland was yesterday formally in-
vited to open the World’s Fair. He has
the matter under consideration and will
answer in a day or two.
Gresham No Longer a Judge.
WASHINGTON, March 7. — Secretary
Gresham has filed his resignation as
Judge of the Seventh Circuit and it has
been accepted.
Tommy Russell Gets $14,000.
NEW YORK, March 7.—The parents of
“Little Lord Fauntleroy” Tommy Russell
have recovered in the Supreme Court a
verdict of $14,000 against Edward K.
House, who dramatized Mark Twain’s
“Prince and Pauper.” They made a con-
tract wlth House to produce the piece for
two years, with their son in the leading
role, at a salary of $100 a week. After
playing seven weeks House stopped the
play.
The Offering to the Pope.
NEW YORK, March 7.-—-According to
the report just made public by the Very
Rev. Joseph F. Mooney, Chancellor of
the New York Archdiocese, the collection
taken up for the Pope in all the churches
of the archdiocese February 8, on the oc-
casion of His Holiness’s golden Jubilee,
amounted to $17,557.50, as against $42,000
collected in 1889 at the celebration of the
fiftieth anniversary of his ordination.
