engagement to-night.
Justice Townsend left the office of
Justice of the Peace of our city yester-
day, after a long term of faithful, effi-
cient and satisfactory service. His
successor has not yet been appointed,
but we are sure that whoever he may
be no fairer minded man will be found
than was Charles R. Townsend.
The old and worn out question of
good roads should now be supplanted
by the question of good sidewalks.
The sidewalks of this city are in a con-
dition that is, at best, disgraceful to
any civilized city. An ordinance rela-
tive to this matter exists, yet nothing
is ever done about it. The officials who
should attend to the matter seem per-
fe ctly content to feel their way along
over the ice covered walks with but
one thought in mifid, that of passing
them" 1n safety. The trouble does not
exist on the outskirts of the city, but
right in its very center where thousands
of people pass daily. Look down Wash-
ington street. Can any of the old resi-
dents remember a time when the walks
on the south side of the street wele
ever cleaned? Why not remedy this
~ evil now ?
