room, and many plans were formed for

India correspondent. An immediate
stop should be put to the practice to
which he alludes :
It is thecnstom once every six months
for the native infantry regiment sta-
tioned at Alipore, near Calcutta, to be
summoned to the Alipore Jail, where
there are more than 1,600 native prison-
ers, in order to fire ten rounds of blank
ammunition by section volleys at, 01‘ in
the’direction of, the said criminals, who
crouch down in their cells and tremble
in their shoes—metaphorically, as they
all have naked feet. '
The idea of the civil authorities is, I
presume, to intimidate the prisoners, and
to dissuade them from attempting to
escape. I am sure all the native soldiers
called on to perform .this duty must
think it very strange. I liavv-bm'n a
long time in Calcutta and never ha-nrd of
any prisoner escaping from Alipore
Jail. Besides, there is always :i fairly
strong native police force tile-re ()2! duty. ‘
