Sneak thieves seemed to be plentiful
in our city yesterday. Scarcely had
the gold watch robbery been reported,
than the news was received from Con-
cord street school that two overcoats,
belonging to pupils thereof, had been
stolen. '

About fifty friends of Miss Ella
Thornton, gave her a surprise party at
her home on South Main street, last
evening. There was a deluge of plea-
sure, an abundance of edibles, an
avalanche of music and oceans of con-
gratulations to the charming hostess.

That the people of East Norwalk do
not intend to, nor wish to consolidate
with South Norwalk, was shown by the
result of the ballot taken at the meet-
ing of the East side voters at Volun-
teer Hose house last night, for or
against coming in with the city. Those
in favor numbered about 36, while
those against it numbered over 150.

Mrs. Heron, a German lady, living
on Union street, reported to the police
yesterday afternoon. that while she was
in her yard, hanging out clothes, some-
body had entered the house and robbed
her of a gold watch. She attempted to
give a description of a man whom she
had seen leaving the house. Suspicion

pomts to a young man however, and it
is likely that ’ere long, the guilty par-
ty will be detected. '

A Thief Caught Quickly.

LOCKPORT, N. Y., Jan. 26.—Alex. Mc-
Lean, aprominent, and wealthy man of
Toronto, Canada, was robbed at the
Grand Hotel, this city, of $800 and a gold
watch by Joseph Conley, assistant clerk.
The police found Conley last night dead
drunk at the Old Homestead Hotel with
the bills and watch on his person,

 

Clarkson Would be President.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 26.——It is said that
Gen. James G. Clarkson wants the Repub-
lican nomination for the Presidency in
1896 and that the majority of the National
Committee favors him.
