Day’s Session.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 11.—The bill grants
ing additional quarantine powers and im-
posing additional duties uponethe Secre-
tary of the Treasury and the Marine,
Hospital Service was passed by the Senate
yesterday without division.
An important amendment was adopted
to the section giving the President power
to suspend immigratiOn from infected
countries.
The Anti- Ovation ' bill was then taken
up, and Mr. Vilas (Dem., Wis.) completed
his argument against it. There was no
action on the bill, the Senate adjourning
for lack of a quorum.
After a sharp and decisive contest the
opponents of the bill allowing the Nor-
folk and Western Railroad Company to
extend its line into the District of Colum-
bia admitted themselves defeated, and
the bill was. passed without a division of
the House.
All the business days of the present
week were assigned by the Committee on
Rules to the various cYOmmittees. ’
The joint resolution changing the time
for the meeting of Congress and for the
inauguration of the President was defeat-
ed on its third reading the vote standing:

Arguments Before the World’s Fair Com-
mittee of the House. -
. WASHINGTON, Jan. 11.—The hearing of
the World’s Fair Exposition Committee
of the House on the Sunday opening ques-
tion was begun yesterday. ' The com.
mittee room was filled with members of
the city government of Chicago and other
persons, including four women. The
Chicago City Council’s memorial against
Sunday closing was read and supported
in an address by Mayor Washburne.
President Gompers of the American Feds
eration of Labor took a similar stand.
The American Sabbath Union will advo-
cate closing the fair Sundays.

formal resolutions of protest against
open ng the World’s Fair on Sunday and
the protest will be forwarded to Congress.

Campau, Chairman of the Democratic
State Central Committee, was last night
nominated for United States Senator at a
caucus of the Democratic members of the
Legislature.

cations now are that the Anti-Option bill
will be brou ht to a vote in the Senate
within a few days and that it will pass.

The Missing Err-Treasurer of St. Louis is

ST. LOUIS, Mo., Jan. 11.—Ex-Treasurer
Foerstel has returned to St. Louis. He
was visited at his suburban home by Gus
Mechin, the assignee of -his estate. “He
is a very sick man,” says Mr. Mechin.
“During the three weeks that have elapsed
since the Treasurer’s break-up his hair has
all turned white.” As soon as City Counsel-
or Marshall returns from J eflerson City and
can get the report of the special investi-
gating committee examining the books
of the Treasurer and Comptroller he will
bring suit against Mr. Foerstel’s bonds-
men for the $64,000 due the treasury when
Mr. Foerstel was suspended.
A member of the committee said that
the report contains some startling recom-
mendations, but he was not at liberty to
state juSt what they Were.
LARGE FIRE IN . BOSTON.

stroyed—A Reporter Killed.
BOSTON, Jan. 11.—The largest fire which
Boston has had since Thanksgiving Day,
1889, began about 8.20.0’ciock yesterday
morning in the basement of the six-stor-
ied building, 218 to 222 Federal street,
owned by Hecht Brothers, wool dealers,
who occupied the greater part Of the
premises. ‘
The flames were not checked until 10
o’clock. The fire burned over 25,000 test
of lsnd,1nvolviug a total loss estimated
in the vicinity of $1,655,000. ‘
The insurance loss will be about $1,000,-
000. The fire started, it is supposed, from
an electric wire. There were numerous
accidents, but only one fatality. Joseph

NEW YORK, Jan. 11. —A reception in
honor of Dr. McGIynn was held last night
at the house of Mr. I. K. Funk, 195 wash-
ington Park, Brooklyn, which was at-
tended exclusively by Protesmnt clergy-
man and a few representative Protestant
laymen.

Fiende Lynched by a Mob.
’ Bmmr, Ark., J an. 11.—Paul Scruggs
and Henry Allen, who on Saturday night
murdered, robbed and then burned Rube
Atkinson, his housekeeper and his little
daughter, two and one-half miles west of
Calton Plant, were taken from jail at Cal-
ton Plant by a mob and strung up to
the limb of a convenient tree and their
bodies pierced with bullets. ,

THREATS OF LYNGHING.
Armed Deputies Secured to Guard Dr.
Hill’s Eight .11 urderers.
CHESTERTOWN, Md, Jan. 11. -— The
sheriff of this county is swearing in a
number 'Of deputies Irom among the best
citizens of the place, who will guard the
jail next Friday when the eight colored
murderers of Dr. Hill are hanged. Should
Gov. Brown, who is considering the ap-
peals from various sections of the State
to commute the sentences of five of the
condemned men, decide to hang only
three, there may he need Of the services
of the posse before Friday. The people
here are very much aroused and threats
of lynching are openly made in case of
executive clemency.
Quite a number of citizens who fear
trouble are sending their families out of
town. The murderers themselves are ap-
parently unconcerned over their fate.
They scamper about the jail yard and
p' ay see—saw on the gallows timber. The
jail officers charge that the condemned
have been neglected by their spiritual ad-
visers. Gov. l-Jr own stated yesterday that
he had not yet reached a decision. He
says he is averse to interferring.
FROZEN IN HIS GAB.
An Engineer’s Terrible Experience on Hie
Bun Yesterday.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Jan. 11.—Frozen
so badly on his locomotive that he be-
came unconscious and had to be removed,
Was the fate of Engineer John Brearton
of the Salem, N. J., branch of the Penn—
sylvan Ia Railroad. On the way up from
Salem yesterday afternoon, Brearton had
a hard fight to get through the snow
drifts. The wind blew the head out of
his cab and he soon became numbed. At
Woodbury, the engineer fell unconscious
from the cold and had to be removed from
the engine. He is badly frost bitten.
The Legislature of New Jersey.
TRENTON, N. J.,-Jan 11.—The Legisla-
ture'was organized at 4 o’clock yesterday
afternoon, the . fficers chosen in the can-Y
cuses being elected and the new members
sworn in. When “Tom” Flynn was es-
corted to the Speaker’s chair the throng
in the galleries applauded. His desk was
a mass of flowers sent by admiring friends.
Democrats of his own county, Passaic,
senta beautiful design in honor of the
loot that he is Passaic’s first Speaker in
20 years. After a number of bills had
been introduced both houses adjourned
till Monday.

BROOKLYN, N. Y., Jan. 11.—~The Cor-
oner’s Jury which in the Lee avenue Police
Court, Williamsburg, Monday evening,
inquired into the fatal stabbing of Peter
J. Eckes of 163 South Eighth street on
the ferryboat Dakota on Monday, New
Year’s day, rendered a verdict holding
the seven Italians arrested at the time
responsible for his death and held them
for the Grand Jury.

Train Wreckers in Mississippi.
NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 11.—The south-
bound limited train on the Illinois Cen-
tral, due here at 8.40 o’clock yesterday
morning, was wrecked at 3 a. m. a mile
andahalf north of Beauregard, Miss.,
and 140 miles from New Orleans. The
locomotive, mail and express and baggage
cars left the track, and the front trucks
of the second-class coach also went off.
The engineer, fireman and express agent
were badly injured, but no passengers
were hurt. The cause of the wreck was a
missing rail, which had been removed by
train wreckers.

NIAGARA FALLS, N. Y., Jan. 11. — A
regular . blizzard prevailed along the
frontier all day yesterday with the ther-
mometer ranging from five to 12 degrees
below zero. It looks‘very much as though
the Falls will have a repetition of the
great winter' In 1885, when the cold was so
intense that the thermometer registered
from 10 to 20 degrees below zero for days.
