Burglurgs W'ho Set Fires.
BBIDGEPORT, Jan. 9. — Burglars are
holding a reign of terror in this (-1 t3,- and
besides have turned to tho incendiary
line. Yesterday morning they set fire
to the Advent Christian Church, but the
blaze was discovered and extinguished.
They also had started- a fire in aneigh-
boring street. Burglars were discovered
in several places Saturday night but es-
clued.

Stumpeded by a Mad Dog.
BAIJI‘IMORE, Md., Jan. -9.—-A valuable
imported Scotch collie belonging to
Charles J. Bonapart went mad and ran
amuck in Long Green Valley, a fashion:
able suburb of Baltimore. There were
many society people skating on ponds in
the vicinity at the time. They were
warned of the danger and a stampede
followed. Many left their skates and a
portion of their wrappings behind in
their haste to seek shelter, nor did they
venture out of doors until the news was
brought that the dog had been shot near
the railroad station by a party of gentle-
men who had been in pursuit of it. There
are very few dogs left alive in the neigh-
borhood, 27 that were bitten having been
killed by the pursuing party.

rest yesterday after a long interview with
Magistrate Franueville.

yesterday in relation to his knowledge of
Panama canal matters. The examinmion

The new Procureur General M. Tanon,
has summoned 31 witnesses for the trial,
which begins today. The persons who
will be put on trial are M. Charles de Les-
seps, director of the Panama Canal Com-
pany; M. Msurius Fontane, Secretary
General of the Company; M. Cottu of the
firm of Reinach, Kohn & Co. ., and M.
Gustave Eiffel, the distinguished engineer.
Charles dc Lesseps has caused three Eng-
lish directors of the Suez Canal Company
to besummoned as witnesses in his be-
half.
The ind'ctment against the accused
charges Dc Lesseps, Fontane and Cottu
with having employed fraudulent means
to persuade people to ‘ believe in the ex-
istence of iallacious enterprises and im-
aginary influence or credit, thus causing
divers persons to make subscriptions,
that would n totherwise have beengiven,
for an issue of Panama Canal bonds made
on June 26, 1888, the defendants by the
fraudulent means thus alleged cheating
and defrauding others out of all or part
of their 11. oney thus subscribed.
The second section of the indictment
' relates to the Panama Canal loan of De-
cember 12, 1888. The accused are charged
with hnvmg tried to obtain subscriptions
to this loan on false pretences, their at-
tempted swindling being only frustrated
by Circumstances independent 'of their in-
tention;
It-is also alleged that the accused had
misappropriated or expended, with c.
View of prejudice, the interests of the
bondholders, effects and money given
into their charge as trust depos ts for
specific purposes. .
M. Gustave Eiffel is indicted as an ac-
complice in the alleged swindling. opera-
tions, an is accused of having wilfully
and knowingly received a share of the
sums of money unlawfully procured from
the public, and with having shared in the
profits of the fraud. He is also accused
of having .misappropriatsd funds in-
trusted to him for the mandatory purpose
of expenditure for salaried labor.
Nothing is said in this indictment as to
the bribery or corruption of public ofli-
cials.
DESPERATE MIN ERS.
A Resort to Dynamite Bombs to Help
' Foment a Strike.
BERLIN, Jan. 10.——A dynamite bomb
was exploded in Gelsenkirchen yesterday.
Two small hotels which stand on either
side of the alley in which the bomb was
placed were shakenso that the windows
brOke and plaster fell from the walls.
Although several persons were passing in
the street hardly 20 yards away, nobody
was injured. The man who placed the
bomb hasnot been caught. He is sup-
posed-to bean Anarchist emssary from
the Bear district, who has gone to the
mining region around Gelsenkirchen for
the purpose of fomenting a strike there in
sympathy with the movement on the
scar.

Four Men Lost at Sea.
