Italy’s Recoinage Scheme.
ROME, Oct. 24.—-It was lately reported
that the Italian treasury had decided to
issue a new silver coinage of 20,000,000
lire in franc, two franc and fifty centime
pieces, and that the Old thalers of Naples
are to be used to furnish the metal for the
new coin. The report produced a depress-
ing effect on the bourses, both in Italy
and France, and the ministerial organs
promptly denied the statement, while the
minister of the treasury, to emphasize the
denial, instituted proceedings against The
Corriere Napoli (newspaper) for publish-
ing the report.
The Corriere now declares that the state-
ment was true, and that the ministry only
canceled the order owing to a protest from
all the states comprising the Latin union
against such a violation of the provisions
of the monetary union.
German Printers to Strike.
BERLIN, Oct. 24.—Tlie printers of Breslau
and Leipsic today held meetings at which
preparations were made forthe general
strike of German printers which seems to
be determined upon for tomorrow. At
these meetings the printers resolved to
give their support to the resolution ar-
rived at by the printers of this city yester-
day. This resolution was adopted by 4,000
Berlin printers, who determined to ask
their union to order a general strike on
Saturday in the event of the employers re-
fusing tO grant a working day of nine
hours and an advance of 33 per cent. in
wages. A general strike of German print-
ers is imminent.
Mrs. Parnell May Go Mad.
BRIGHTON, Oct. 24.—Mi's. Parnell cannot
sleep any and is still unable to take food.
It is now feared that her mind may give
way. Her situation is most critical.
Braincd by a Negro.
TORONTO, Oct. 24.-—A. J. Clemmons, a
prominent planter, was brained with a
billet of wood by anegro and instantly
killed. Four colored men had trouble
with Clcmmons about the settlement for
some cotton and attacked him, and one of
them struck him with a heavy stick.
Clemmohs fell and his brother came to his
assistance. He grappled with the negro
and stabbed him, death resulting almost
instantly. Tremendous excitement pro.
vails in the neighborhood.
Aimedlat a Dog and Killed a Man.
Pirrsnn’ne, Oct. 24.——Thomas McMahon
attempted to shoot a dog belonging to
Xavier Steppler that had bitten him. He
went to Steppler’s place and fired at the
dog, which was on the porch. The bullet
passed through the door and killed Mr.
Steppler. McMahon is under arrest.
The Dominion’s Defenses.
OTTAWA, Oct. %.—The militia depart-
ment has been at work for the past three
weeks preparing a. report on the defenses
of Canada asked for by the imperial gov-
ernment. It will be readyin a Week.
Snow in the Adirondacks.
PLATTSBURG, N. Y., Oct. 24,—This sec-
tion of the Adirondacks was visited by a
heavy snowstorm Friday. At Saranac
lake the snow is many inches deep.
Another Bank Failure.
LEWISBURG. ’l‘enn., Oct. 24.—-The Bank
of Lcwisburg has closed its doors. The
officers of the bank say depositors will be
bald in full.
Every Liquor Dealer Indicted.
BANGOR, Me, Oct. 24,—The grand jury
has indicted every liquor dealer in Bar
Harbor for alleged violation of the liquor
laws.
Shot Himself in the Head.
NEW YORK. Oct. Sir—James D. Arm-
strong, aged 50, committed suicide by
shooting himself in the head.
COLUMBUS, 0., Oct. 24.—Martin Rods, a
Germ an, en route with his wife a baby from
California to Pennsylvania, leaped from a
Miami express train going thirty miles
an hour, while the train was near South
Charleston, last night. He placed his baby
in his wife’s arms and opening the win-
dow jumped out into the darkness. The
train was stopped and backed to the place
where the affair occurred, but no trace of
the man could be found. He was seen to
alight on his feet and then run away. The
man was evidently insane. The passen-
gers made up a purse for the woman, who
is still here at the depot.
Run Amuclr with a Revolver.
AUSTIN. Min, Oct. 24,—Jack Blandy got
drunk, drew two revolvers and began
firing in all directions. Every method
was resorted to to control him, but with-
out success. Finally one of the police ran
up stairs in a building, and, with the end
of a rope, on which was tied a heavy stone,
brought the man to earth. He was imme-
diately locked up. On investigation it
was found that a valuable horse had been
killed and a Norwegian badly wounded.
Oregon and the Fair.
PORTLAND. Or., Oct. 24.—On account of
the failure of the legislature to make an
appropriation for a \Vorld’s fair exhibit at
Chicago in 1893, the state board of com-
mei-ce has‘employed a number of men to
canvass Oregon for the purpose of raising
at least $25,000, to be applied toward mak-
ing an exhibit. Each canvasser has a let-
ter of authority from the executive com-
mittee of the lVorld’s Columbian exhibi-
tion, and is supplied with blank notes.
Beaten Into Unconsciousness.
DAYTON, 0., Oct. 24.—Ed Gunckel, driver
of a hack between here and the village of
Germantown, was waylaid by highway-
men near Bear Creek and beaten until he
became unconscious. The horses got back
on the pike and without the driver hauled
the back four miles to the stable in Ger-
m’antown. The missing driver was found
later still unconscious, but he will recover.
The robbers escaped.
Colonel Smith Under Charges.
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 24.—Ex-Mayor Wil-
liam B. Smith has been deposed from the
command of the Third regiment, N. G. P.,
of which he was elected colonel, pending
an investigation of charges of forgery, em-
bezzlement and conduct unbecoming an
officer, prepared by Captain Badger, one of
the company commanders.
Miss Dresser Wants 850,000.
NEWPORT, R. 1., Oct. 24.—-:Miss Dresser
has sued the Edison Electric Light com-
pany for $50,000. Miss Dresser’s horses be-
came frightened at the noise made at the
works of the company and ran away. The
lady was thrown out of her vehicle and
severely injured.
More Miners’ Riots May‘ Ensue.
WEST NEWTON, Pa, Oct. 24.—Scott (N o.
2) mine was started With the aid of im-
ported Hons. The miners are determined
,to keep imported workmen away, and sig-
nificantly point to the graves of the twen-
ty htalians in Armstrong who fell in the

Minister Ryan Coming Home.
CITY or MEXICO, Oct. 24.—'Minister
Ryan has left for the United States. He
expects to be in Washington by Nov. 1.
He goes probably to confer with the state
department concerning reciprocity nego-
tlations.
A Child Burned to Death.
COLUMBUS, Ind., Oct. 24.——John Taylor,
afarmer, residing east of here, has lost
his fine residence by fire. His two-year-
old daughter was so badly burned that
she died.

NEW BEDrouD. Mass, Oct. 24.——The jury
in the case of Charles J. Tighe, of Boston,
charged with the murder of Peter John.

As the weakest part of the chain is the
pivot which joins the anchor’s length to
the ship’s, the regulations require its fre-
quent inspection in order to ascertain
whether it is at all worn there and needs
to be replaced. Hence this whole great
mass of extra heavy chain has to be hauled
out of the water and “sighted” once a
week, and, in the old fashioned ships, en-
tirely by hand. The lantern hoisting is
another much dreaded job. A lightship
lantern weighs about four tons, and to
get it up to the masthead requires the
combined strength of everybody aboard,
from the captain to the cook.
As it is, the United States enjoys the
reputation of having the most effective
lightship service in the world—certainly
the best in proportion to the extent of
coast guarded by the ships.
The Postal Telegraph. "‘
The brief but sharp contest between the
Western Union Telegraph company and a
branch of the Associated Press has had
the effect of drawing attention to the
amount of money which the telegraph
companies lose every year through letting
accounts run for indefinite periods and
then disputing over them.
It is estimated that these losses, in the
case of the Western Union company,would
average not far from $300,000 to $400,000 a
year. In the ofiice here, which is by no
means a huge affair like the one in New
York city, there is a tradition of accounts
of some magnitude, contracted with
prominent office holders, which have hung
on as long as twelve years or more, and
finally had to be wiped off the books as
dead.
It is understood that Postmaster Gen-
eral Wanamaker is collecting data of these
cases with the purpose of using them in
his next recommendation to congress in
favor of a postal telegraph. His ground
will be that a corporation enjoying such
public franchises as the telegraph com-
panies do ought not be allowed to let their
accounts run on in this way, as they are
obliged to make up on one customer what
they lose on another.
According to the idyllic system which
he advocates, there could not be any losses,
because the government would not be in a
position to extend personal courtesies, or
to give one business concern advantage
over another, even for the encouragement
of trade.
Railroad Lands Restored.
Secretary Noble has issued the following
order: “It is hereby ordered that all lands
in the Ashland (Wis.) land district under
withdrawals heretofore made and held for
indemnity purposes under grants for the
benefit of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneap-
olis and Omaha Railway company, be and
hereby are restored to the public domain
and opened to settlement and entry under
the general land laws as construed by this
department: provided that this order shall
not take efiect until published notice of
the contents hereof shall have been given
in the vicinity of said lands for six days,
under your direction.
“In connection with such notice you are
instructed to announce that no person
will be recognized as requiring any claim,
or right to any of said lands, who seeks to
initiate or perfect the same by means of
force, threats or intimidation.” The area
of land thrown open to settlement by the
above order is 94,540 acres, subject to de-
ductions by purchasers who claim under
the act of March 3, 1887.
The Wisconsin Safe.
LONDON, Oct. 24. —The Guion line
steamer Wisconsin, Captain Worrall,
which left New York Oct. 11 for Liverpool,
and over whose nonarrival there was some
apprehension, reached Queenstown. She
was retarded by the storms, but escaped
serious damage.
