A city meeting was held last night to
hear the report of the committee ap-
pointed to investigate as to how the city
streets should be lighted, to the best
advantage and profit to the city. City
Clerk \Vilcox read the report, and it
was explained in detail by Ex~Mayor
Adams. On motion of Gen. Taylor the
leport was accepted. Ex-Mayor Swartz
then Offered a resolution, in effect, that
the city appropriate the sum of $22 ,500,
as suggested 1n the report, for the pur-
chase of land, buildings and apparatus
necessaiy to light the xastr eet, with elec-
t1 lc lamps, the same to be subject to the
approval Of a city meeting to be called
The resolution was
spoken in favor of its acceptance by
Gen. Taylor and against by l\11'. Rus-
sell Frost. The resolution was adOpted
bya vote of 543 to 14.
A man who drove into this 01 ty from

Strikers Threaten Violence.
MA'nsnILLEs, 111., Aug 27.—There is im- .
minent danger of a serious riot here re-
sulting f rom labor difficulties. The strik-
ing laborers of the Water Power company
declare that they will resort to violence if
necessary to prevent new men from work-
The mayor has appointed a large
force as extra police. The situation is ex-
tremely threatening.
Big Strike of Natural Gas.
OswEeo, N. Y., Aug. 27.—The largest
vein of natural gas ever struck at Sandy
Creek, Oswego county, was tapped at a
depth of 102 feet. The noise of the escap-
ing gas can be heard for a distance of one
mile. It blew the tools in _all directions.
The drillers fled. There are now nine live
Wells.

The two mastcd schooner Henry M.
Clark, commanded by Captain Smith

ran into the end of the Reading railroad
iron pier, Atlantic City, demolishing the
dressing rooms at the end of the pier and
otherwise damaging it.
John W. Perkins, while at 'work at a
circular saw in a Baltimore mill, was
transfixed with a piece of wood which the
saw hurled at him with frightful velocity,
and died soon afterward from the effects
of the injuries.
Mike Kelly has jumped the American
association and joined the Boston league
club. The story goes that'he is to get
$25,000 for the balance of this season and
the whole of next season.
The Norwegian collier Frey, bound from
an English port for Drontheim, caught
fire andwas burned to the water’s edge
when near Bergen on Saturday last.
Eight of her crew were drowned. Seven
were saved.
Completed census statistics show the
population of Pennsylvania' 1n 1890 to have
been35, 218, 014, an increase in the past de-
cade of 975,135, or 22.77 per cent.
Secretary of the Treasury Foster says
