Convicts Return to Coal Creek.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn” July 30. —N early 300
convicts have been returned to Cool Creek,
including twenty-four for the mines of

« the. Tennessee Coal and Mining company.
The original trouble came about 01'1- 1' the
forty convicts imported by that company
to build stockades. It' IS the opinion here
that the action of the coal company in re-
turning their convicts is impolitic and

reprehensible at this juncture.

Dobson’ s Weavers Strike Again.

PHILADELPHIA, July 30. —«The weavers
at Dobson’ s mills, Falls of Schuylkill,
have again struck. The weavers declare
thatanumber of their friends 11 ere dis-
charged after being taken on and their
sympathy is with them and they will stay
out until they are reinstated.

 

 

Won’t Elect This Year.

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb., July 30. ——Chair—
man Watson has abandoned the project of
electing a governor ibis year, having come
to the conclusion that such a proceeding
would not be legal. He has decided not to
call a special meeting of the Republican
state central committee.

Dow Withdraws.

JAMESTOWN, N. Y., July 30. —It is an-
nounced that Charles M. Dow has with-
drawn from the senatorial canvass for the
senatorial nomination in this district.
There will, therefore, be no opposition to
Senator Vedder’ 5 nomination in the con-
vention next Tuesday.

Expensive Sight Seeing.

SAG HARBOR, L. 1., July 30. —While the
employes of the Peconic bank were watch-
ing the passing of a procession, a thief en-
tered the bank and grabbed a package
containing $3,500, with which he escaped.

 

Reciprocity with San Domingo.
WASHINGTON, July 30,—The reciprocity
treaty between the United States and San
Domingo has been signed and will be pro-
claimed by the president in the early part
of next month.

The New York Herald Indicted.
NEW YORK, July 3.-—The New York
Herald has been indicted by the grand
jury for publishing an account of the

quadruple electrocution at Sing Sing.

President Lawson Dead.
NEWBURG, N. Y., July 30.—William C.
Lawson, president of the State Association
Order of Firemen, died after along illness.
He was sixty-six years of age.

mand. Governments steady; currency as, 110
bid; 45, coupon, 117 bid, 4555, do.,100% bid.

The principal trading in stocks this morning
was in Burlington, Northern Pacific preferred,
St. Paul, Tennessee Coal and the Sugar Trusts.
The tone was weak, and during the first hour
the whole market, on a. sli ht pressure to sell,
declined lg to 1 per cent. urlington was sold
because the statement for June, published
yesterday, although showing an increase in the
earnings for J one, did not show a satisfactory
state of affairs on a closer investigation. After
11 'o‘clock there was a slight rally, except in
Tennessee Coal, which was especially weak and
declined fromza to 24%. Sugar Trusts were

.the strongest specialties of the second hour,
advancing to 80% from 79%. At the close the
market was dull. The sales for the morning
amounted to 61,311) shares.
