Struck Down by a Cowardly

Last evening at 0 o ’clock as Eugene‘

Scofield of East Norwalk was returning,
from his work, and when crossmg the.
Housatonic track at South Norwalk,

near the lock factory, Cavanaugh’ 8 ex- .
press wagOn, driven by Martin Sullivan: .
nearly ran over him. To save himself
Mr Scofield threw 11p his arm and a
dinner pail which he carried in his
hand struck the horse across the nose.

Without a word Sullivan jumped from ;.
aking his heavy whip 1.

the head with the loaded butt, cutting
a gash 1n his scalp four inches long and j
three inches deep and laying bare the
scu11.Scofield was assisted by friends
to Hoyt’s pharmacy where his wOund
was attended to by Drug orgist Hoyt,
after which he was taken home by .
Charley Finch and Dr Baker called
in.
Within five minutes after the assault
Sullivan was arrested by Officer Glad-
stone, and later was released upon
bonds. This morning when the case
was called before J ust1ce Morrell, Mr.
Scofield was too ill to appear, and Sul-
livan was again releas
munificent bonds of $50.
The DAILY GAZETTE hopes that J us- .
tice Mo1rell will see the seriousness 0f 1

this assault and will give Sullivan the ,

full extent of the law for sucha coward-
