Thaddeus B. Morton, a war veteran,
from this state, is very ill with con-
sumption at his home on Second ave-
nue, East Norwalk.

Quite a number of our local. sports
take in the big .races daily. It is also
stated that they take more money there
than they bring back.

Builder Raymond has a gang of men
at work at Chimmon’s Island. They go
to and from South Norwalk on the
steam launch Minetta.

Henry Jennings, a driver for _ the
Adams Express Co-, was overcome by
the heat yesterday but the results were
not of a serious nature.

The Women’s Relief Corps are hard
at W ork on the details of their proposed
fair which 1s to be held on the 18th 19th
and 20th of this month.

A citizen asks: “What has become
of the town sign-post that stood, near
the Congregational chur,ch before the
improvement in that section was com-
menced?”

G1 cat are the expectations for the
June meeting of the Gentlemen’s Driv-
ing association next week, and unless
it rains they will be realized.

Children’s day Will be celebrated at
the Methodist church, next Sunday.

The teachers and scholars propose

making all who attend happy.

Patent fans are being placed in Mrs.
Sarah Larrigan’s restaurant in the
Thos. Knapp building. Sarah is al-
ways attentive to the wants and com-
forts of her many customers.

Asst. Supt. Grubb, of the Metropol-
itan Insurance CO., will be succeeded
next week by Mr. Peter O’Brien, Mr.
Grubb who has made himself quite
popular here, has been transferred to
a more important position in Bridge-
port.

John Brummer and J. H. McNamara
yesterday afternoon donned new caps,
and mounting their bicycles started for
Roton Point. They made the trip
there in the remarkable time of seven
hours and fifty-two minutes. But for
the new caps they say it would have
taken ten hours.

A strawberry festival will be held at
the Congregational church this even-
ing, at which Munson Pardee will play

 

a banjo solo, provided the ladies hav- '

ing the matter 1n charge do not object.
True it 1s, how ever, that the Qui Viva
Banjo club of which he is a member
will play some of their prettiest selec-
tions.

It 1s stated that the testimony having
the greatest weight with the county
commissioneis yesterday, in their de-
cision against the granting of a license
to Sam Gaylor of Darien, was gained
by Rev. Mr. Requa of that place by a
bit of strategy last Sunday night. After
the close of the meeting in the church
on that evening he with a companion

secured a boat and rowed to the rear of 1.

Gaylor’s place, which is located near
the shore. Soon after arriving there
he heard a whistle, and replied, and
then a second whistle with a hail “Any-

Mrs. Maggie Brophy was sent to jail
for sixty days, this morning. It Is not
Maggie’s first visit to that place.- If

fact Maggie has no doubt honestly lost
the count, as Brigham Young did as to

A report to the effect that the fire last
night was started for the purpose of

Provided patronage is extended to
warrant it, the steamer Huntington will
make a trip to this city from Hunting-
ton, L. I., every Friday during the sea-
son. Our merchants will, we think,
find it to their advantage to patronize
the boat in the purchase of garden
truck which will be brought from Long
Island and offered to them at advanta-
geous prices. If they do so it may be
that the boat will make more frequent
trips. The fare to Huntington is 50
cents or 75 cents for excursion tickets.
Capt. I. B. Young 1s popular and de-
servedly so. Let us all boom the Hunt-
ington from Huntington. We presume
the boat can be engaged for excursion
parties. She will be here next Friday,
a. m., returning at 4 p. m.

The new fire bell at East Norwalk
was, we believe, twanged last night for
the first time for fire. It was at about
10:30 o’clock. The fire proved to be in
the new cottage nearly completed,
owned by Mr.
located on Keyser avenue. The fire-
men responded promptly. Box 3 in
this city was also rung and our fire de-
partment hastened to the scene. The

flames were extinguished .quickly, but ’

damage in excess of $600; was done.
The 'fire, undoubtedly incendiary, was
started on the cellar wall close to the
stairs and ate its way up between the
walls to the loof on the north side and
thence acrOss over the peak to the
south side, where it was drowned out.
The roof timbers are considerably
charred, and a burned space about two
feet wide marks the course of the fire
from its star ting 1301115311115 walls are
also considerably damaged. The build-
ers', Ayres &. Reynolds, have their loss
covered' by insurance through the
agency OfJ. M. Layton. Mr. Wheeler
the owner placed insurance on the
house with Messrs. Taylor & Golden,
last week. The place was nearly leady
for occupancy.
