sick for nearly three weeks, is improv-
ing.

will move into their new quarters, to-
morrow.

The chimney on IVilliam H. Smith’s
new house on Trinity Place, is a re-
markably attractive piece of werk.

Mike says that Jim Sullivan has a
new hat. Mike would have one him-
self, but his horse got left at the post.

Elton Baker, foreman of the trim-
ming department at Crofut & Knapp’s
shop N o. 1, is very sick at his home on
West street.

The Rooster club are quite indignant
at what they claim to be the giving
away of the club’s secrets by Commo-
dore Golden.

\Vilbur Ayres claims that a promi-
nent resident of the borough has eloped
with his (Ayres’) wife. Mr. Ayres is
making remarkable statements of late.

While crossing the Consolidated rail-
road tracks, this morning, the wheels
of George N orvell’s wagon caught in
the track bendrng the axle to some ex-
tent and nearly wrenching the wheel
off.

Several of our citizens, among others
Postmaster Doty, are in receipt of let—
ters from Odessa, Southern Russia, so-
liciting their patronage in the purchase
of woolens. \Ve shall be surprised if
there are any invoices of woolens sent
from Odessa to this city.

The oyster goes out to-day. That is
to say, the month with the oyster letter
in it expires. A great many people do
not take much stock in this idea, how-
ever. They prefer to be guided by old
Sandy’s motto : “When ’ystcrs air good
they air good, and when they aint they
isn’t.”

\V. F. Green, of Bridgeport, super-
intendent of the John Hancock Life In-
surance Co., was on Saturday evening
presented with alarge frame containing
the pictures of his working force in that
city. It will be on exhibition in the
window of the branch Office of the GA-
ZETTE next week.

Capt. and Mrs. William I. Stevens,
of Rowayton, gave a reception last
evening, to Mr. and Mrs. I. Stevens,
who were married the day before.
Nearly 150 guests were present, among
them several from this city, who spent
a delightful evening. Dancing was a
leading pleasure. The music was from
Stamford. Caterer D’Artois served a
fine collation.

The entertainment given by Butler
Lodge I. O. O. F., this city, last even-
ing in their room was a grand success,
the programme being carried out to
perfection. Heine’s orchestra furnished
music and rendered some very fine see
lections. The dances given by Master
Tilly were well rendered, and enjoyed
by all. At the close, Noble Grand John
R. Finch was presented with a hand-
some cake bearing the emblems of
Friendship, Love, Truth; the presen-
tation speech was by George Whepley.
It was a late hour when “Home Sweet
Home” was played by the orchestra,
and all present returned to their homes
with pleasantest memories of the occa-
Sion.

To-night, the officers and members
of Court Mahackemo, NO. 7,580,

A. C. F. of A., this city, will visit Nor-
walk, when COurt Narruk, No. 7,929,
will be formally instituted. Among
the visitors will be Dr. F. H. W'heeler,
High Chief ,Ranger Joseph Ivers, Sub.
High Chief Ranger of the Grand
Court of Connecticut, also the officers
and members of Court Gen. P. H.
Sheridan, of Stamford, Court Narruk,
which is the old Indian name of Nor-
".valk, starts with the brightest pros-
pects, and being the youngest Court
in Connecticut its career will be watch-
ed with great interest throughout the
the state. The ncw Court has secured
rooms in the GAZETTE building and
will meet the second and fourth Thurs-
days of each month. Much credit
should be accorded Bernard Gastaldi,
formerly of Court Prosperity, of New
Britain, for the way in which he has
Worked to institute aCourt of FOrestry
in Norwalk. ' He also organized Court
Mahackemo in this city. Dr. Baldwin
has been elected physician of Court
Narruk.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hutchinson and
daughter Kittie, arrived home last
night after a sojourn of three months
in Daytona, Fla. All are in the best
of health. .. — --

Everett S. Wheeler, the Washington
street poet, tells how when a boy he
captured a whole flock of crows, with a
crow trap. He first caught a crow
alive, and pinned it to the ground on
its back, its claws naturally pointing
upward, and the trap was completed.
Other crows coming to the pinioned’
bird’s assistancejone of them would be
caught in its claws, they holding on
with the grip of a steel trap. It in
turn was transformed into a trap and so
on until the whole flock, thirty-two in
number,were captured.

\Vhen the Consolidated railroad’s ex-
tra two tracks are completed, (if a fel-
low is fired off a train, the jury ought
to award him two cents damages, In-
stead of one cent, as theretofore when
the company owned but two tracks—
a grand increase of 100 per cent. “The
mills of the gods grind slowly,” etc.

The U. G. TR. A. entertainmentlast
evening was well patronized, and all
seemed well pleased with the perform-
ance which, owing to the non—appear—
ance of some who had engaged to take
part therein, had to be partly recon-
structed and hastily improvised for the
occasion, and the thanks of the Associ-
ation are tendered those who kindly
stepped in to fill the breach, as well as
to all others who so ably took the parts
which they had previously engaged to
fill. The next entertainment will be
held during the third week in May,
when the beautiful and affecting drama
of “ The Last Loaf” will be presented.

Joyce and Comstock, the missing
fishermen, returned home yesterday
afternoon. They lodged on Nauvoo
Island‘Tuesday night, suffering no in-
convenience except a lack of drinking
water. The weather was cold, but they
built a fire and, having made a bed of
dried sedge, they were as comfortable
as a couple of cockroaches in a lady’s

Fire in Wesport.

Between 1 and 2 o’clock yesterday af-

ternoon the residence of F. H. Nash
was discovered to be on fire. An alarm
'was given and the neighbors responded
and in a few moments the fire depart-
ment was on hand, and Vigilant was
get to work taking water from a elstern
on Charles Fable’s place. By this time
Pioneer Hook and Ladder was on hand
and the stream which Vigilant put up—
on the house, aided by the fire extin-
guishers from the truck, soon had the
fire under control. The wind was blow—
ing briskly at the time and in a direc-
tion to drive the flames upon the main
house, and had not the firemen’s arrival
been so prompt, the entire building
would have been destroyed.

originated in a peculiar manner: acloth
attached to a pole and saturated with
kerosene had been used in destroying
worms on the trees at the rear of the
house, and a small piece blew off and
lodged under the shingles with‘thCh

To Holders of Gold Watch Ballots.

Those having gold watch ballots
which they desire to have counted, will
greatly facilitate the onerous labors of
the committee of counters, if they will
send them in at once. No ballots can
be received after 7 o’clock to-morrow
evening. In this connection it is prop-
er to state that the publication of the
vote, for the past few days has been
purposely suspended, and that no one
either inside or outside our office
knows the‘statc of the vote.

Suicide at West Niorwalk'. ,

Mr. H. L. IVeed, an old resident of
West Norwalk; who has been ill for
some time past, while in a state of great
mental depressron, took. an overdoseof
laudanum yesterday w1th suicldal 1n}
tent, and dled at 5 o’clock this mornj-
Ing. He was about ’70 years of age.
