Rev. Edward Anderson of this town,
addressed a meeting of the Christian
Endeavor Socii'ly in New Haven (-11
Monday evening. In his opening re-
marks he said: «“I' am reminded since I

a Christian Endeavor society was going
to be formed from my church in Nor

The Methodist church was well filled
on Monday evening and those. pres-
ent were highly entertained by'a pro—
gramme that had been arranged by the
young people. It was one of the best
sociables that has been held this season
and the result was very satisfactory.
The instrumental part of the programme
consisted of a duettr by Misses Minnie
Bates and Lena Crows, a solo by Miss
Edith Hunt, a piano and corner duett by
(Jhas. Paddock and daughter Lottie, and
piano solos by Mrs. James Golden and
Mrs. Wm. F. Hoyt. LeoDrvis recited
"Only a Pin," and Miss Minnie Godfrey
gave a reading. Recitations were also
given by Miss May Raymond and Chas.
Hoyt. and Miss Genevieve Smith read a
selection entitled “On the Line.” Misses
Sadie Bodwell and Mattie Raymond sang
a pretty duett and vocal solos were rend.
ered by Miss Florence Thompson and
Miss Hilda Schuell. A female quartelto
including Misses Sadie Bodwell, Minnie
Bates, Lena Crown and Mattie Raymond
concluded the evening- entertainment
by singing “Good Night" and the norm
puny dispersed very well satisfied with

Mrs. J‘. 8. George of Bridgeport, was

about 2 o‘clock Monday, morning. She

year-old daughter. The latter had heard
her mulber go out, and subsequently
awoke the others. The body was warm.
but life was extinct. The rope is used

Lounsbury and other state officials to
Philadelphm, the proposition of an ex~
tra legislative session was freely discus-
sed. As the legislative committees rep»
resented the several counties. the senti:
ments of the different sections of the
state were quite thoroughly ascertained
and were generally adverse. Governor
Inunsbury is reported as saying that he
should not think of calling an extra seas
siori on the grade crossing matter unless
there was a general demand for it.
The Melville Manufacturing 00., did
not enlarge their facot'ry any too soon,
and judging from the orders constantly
coming in for their special grade of stiff
but (which has steadily gained in pop-
ularity owing to the uniform quality
and good wear), the company will be
obliged to enlarge again. The Hazel
color introduced this season bids fair to
outsell their fomus Nutre color. The
Melville trade mark. now in use for the
past fifteen years, is almost a household
word with wearers of the hats, cud
many purchasers will go I long way

The Bennett & Moullon Comic Opera
(‘11. havo been entertaining large audi-
ences this week in Music Hall. No com-
pany charging popular prices has ever
visited this town that could compare
wiih than. and a great many companies
bringing with their) noted primn dorms
have failed to give the satisfaction that
Mr. Baker‘s justly celebrated company is
giving. The repertoire has included
the operas that necessarily bring out the
talent of the company, and they have
proved themselves equal to the occasion
at every performance. Miss Della Fox
captivated the audience at the first per-
formance and has continued to grow in
favor during the week by her sweet siog~
ing and graceful acting. Considering
her age she is certainly a. “phenomenal.”
Miss Kittie Marcellus has also won a host
of admirers. She possesses a remark-
ably sweet voice and her acting is a
pleasing feature of the operas. Monday
night "Ribert Macairc” was produced in
which Tom Ricketts and Chas. Bigelow,
the two thieves. eusuuued their parts in
fine style. The hall was crowded and
the performers received liberal applause.
011 Tuesday evening "Famine“ was pro-
duced, and the beauty of the opera. sur-
prised a great many who had never
heard of it. The attendance at the
matinee on Wednesday was small owing
to the fair but “The Queen‘s Lace Hand-
kerchief“ was rendered in a pleasing
manner. In the evening a large audi-
ence greeted “Fatiniiza” and it was one
of the best efforts of the week. The
“Bohemian Girl” last. night gave ex~
cellent satisfaction and special mention
should be made-of the manner in which
Miss Edith Barton performed her part,
,“Queen of the Gypsies.” Her singing
was first-class and her acting superb
in every particular. There is. little
doubt that the other operas of the week
will belargely attended. This evening
“Fro Diavolo" will be presented and to-
morrow afternoon “H. M. S. Pinafore"
will be given. In the evening “Robert
Macaire" will again be produced. The
manner in which Miss Emma R. fisinre
acquits herself as director of music is
worthy of mention. All dowel! and
much of the credit due to the company,
success can be nttributedto its gentle.

Oyster Suppers.
The ladies of the First M. E. church
are making arrangements for a fair and
oyster supper that they intend to hold
on Tuesday and \Vedneseay evenings,
0st. 4th and 51h. Considerable interest
is being taken in the affair and an enjoy~
able event \vrll undoubtedly be the result
of the undertaking.
The Temperance Reform Association
is goiiig'to hold an oyster supper in their
room, Sword‘s IIall, Friday and Satur-

The famous Daribury fair is now near

the greatest outdoor festival in New ling-
land. and everybody who visits it is as—

()n» wing is to be used as an art gallery,
another is devoted to displays of ma-
chiucry.
A building is given up to a poultry
show. and another building is devoted
to a bench show. There are three tents
for the display of vegetables. grains and
other farm and garden products. And
another enclosure for the display of agri-
cultural machinery in full operation-
Thvre are a number of enclosed pens for
the exhibition of blooded stock, and
numerous stables for horses. The society
has afine half-mile track, and a grand
stand capable of comfortably seating
5,00.) people. The ample grounls are in
supctiul‘ condition, and thousands of
dollars have been spent in their improve-
ment. :
The exhibition, the great mass of peo-
ple. and the army of fukirs and show-
men form a spectacle rarely seen and
which is well worth travelling many
miles to see.
