The session of the American Library
Association at: the Thousand Islands dur-
ing last week has been notable in its in-
dication of the rapid growth of public
opinion respecting the usefulneasofAmer-
icon libraries to our people. The object.
of this body of men and women, which
has the character of a national organiza-
tion. is to popularize the library as the
agent by which the general education of
the people can be accomplished. It is here
that. the thought of our chief librarians
is concentrated. Nothing has been done
in England for placing books in the
hands of the people that looks to larger
usefulness than the deliberate swing of
the librarians in our great cities and in
the principal manufacturing towns into
the ctiort to interest the whole popula-
tion in the reading of pleasant and use-
ful books and in reaching out to the
larger measure 'of life which is the
natural result of this effort. Once the
librarian was the man of the closet: who
guarded his books from the profane: now
he is the public herald for the diti‘usion
of the host trading among all sorts and
conditions of men, and rivals the school.

reach. but it places in the hands of those

be introduced into society. The great
drawback in the present socialistic move-
ment is the ignorance of the leaders.
They have ideas, but they are ideas
which need the rectification of larger
outsights. It is one of theself—adjusting
agencies of society in the future that the
public library abnll indirectly train this
class of mm, through the methods of
popular education, which may be at-
tached to the library. so that they shall
not mistaken part for a whole of the
social compact. The library is one of
the most liberal and adjusting agencies
in our modern civilization, and its broad-
or uses as n cii'il‘izer, as a humanizer,
have only begun to manifest themselves.

respect for themselves, as a class, and
that. recognition of their work as public
teachers which will enable them to take
their rightful place as an educational
