Edward \V. Lowndes of Rowaytou,
died were suddenly last Friday at the
advanced age of 69 years. He was fecl~
ing unusually well on‘ the previous day
but at noon on Friday he returned home
and died in a very short time. Mr.
Lowndes was born in New York but
came to this town when a boy and has
spent about sixty years here. His
business connections have made him one
of the well known citizens of the town
and the news of his death will be heard
with regret. His father, Edward W.
Lowndes, Sn, did freighting business
between this town and New York for
Gershom Smith when farming was car»
ried on extensively on Smith‘s Island.

persons had seen a man rob a passenger,
who was sleeping, of a diamond pin and
a gold watch. Uasliaw boarded the train
and arrested the man, whose name is
Morris Riley, but after the train had
started it was learned that the man had
an accomplice and that it would be
necessary to have the owner of the valus
ables return to this City in order to con-
vict. the prisoner. \Vurd was telegraph:
ed to New York to return both of the
men but the accomplice had left the
train before reaching New York and
only the owner of the stolen property
returned. no identified the stolen goods
and a hearing was 'held before Judge
Knapp who bound him over to the super-
ior court. The history of the man from
.whom the goods were robbed is by no
means a tame one. While in this city
he stated that the diamond was the gift
of 3 Count in London; that a few weeks
ago he had another one stolen from him
valued at $2,700 which was presented to
him in Italy. He claimed to have a
family summering at Narragansett Pier
