Help for Texas.

Wodasert this week an earnest appeal
from Misal‘rancis Willard for the peo-
ple of Texas—who are battling bravely
against the liquor traffic in that state—
may the leader of the hosts of Israel give
victory to this courageous people.

A PLEA FOR TEXAS.

Dear Shaina—The next, state which
must pass the ordeal of battle in the con-
stitutional amendment line is Texas.
The votoisto be taken August 4, less
than four months hence. Our friends
there believe we have fair hopes of win-
ning. provided the usual countvout dg
not prevail.

" But no state has ever worked at such
a disadvantage owing to its immense
area, scattered population, and lack of
sinews of war. The motto of the W. C.
T. U. is, “Thou hast given me a south.
land; give me also springs of water.“
Let us also help to make that prayer a
fact. Personally, I propose to send one

, hundred dollars to the W. C. 'I‘. U. as
my donation, giving lectures at the
north by which to earn the amount.
This I mention only loathe reason that
I hesitate to ask others to do what I will

- not myself attempt; but having done this,
I feel free to urge all the friends of tem-
perance to send money and literature to
our dev‘otednsvorkers in the Lone Star
state.

If money is forwarded to me 1 will
promptly send it on to the W. C. T., U.
of Texas, and acknowledge the same
through The Union Signal. If speakers
volunteer their service, let them report to
Captain E. L. Dolioney, Paris, Texas.

Three liquor dealers, lictterton, Ogden
and Klein of Dallas. Texas, are visiting
Nothorn cities for the purpose of raising
a $50,000 fund for use in the Amend~
ment Campaign, especially in its closing
days. The delegation has already visit-
ed four of our largest cities. receiving in
each place pledges of large sums. It is
said that in Cincinnati one distiller gave
them his check for $10,000. In Chicago
the distilling and wholesale liquor chins
held a meeting at which it was resolved
that each wholesale liquor dealer should
be assessed $100 for the cause of liquor
in Texas: and that. in addition, each dis-
tiller and wholesale dealer should pay an
assessment of ten cents on each barrel
of whisky in his stock. It is estimated
that this action alone will net carom.—

in view of these facts is it. not time
for Temperance people to stand up and
be counted. There are but two sides—
which are you on?

Liberality for good purposes ought not
to how more sluggishly than liberaliiy

for bad purposes. The liquor men pre-
dict a majority of 25,000 for the amend-
ment, unless the tide can be turned. It
would be a special pleasure to see the
Lone Star state join the galaxy of Maine,
Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Is-
I land, Kansas and Iowa.

The Texas Prohibitionists evidently
mean business: While Dr. J. F. Ives
was making a Prohibition speech at
Welborn a political opponent shot at
him. but missed him, while the speaker
continued his argument as if nothing
had happenal. Rotten eggs and vege-
table missiles would not have made
much headway against such a self pos~
sessed man as Dr. Ives.

A Waterbury Invention.

William Stockwood of Waterbury has
invented and placed in the service at the
district telegraph oflice there an ingeni—
ous contrivance which is designed to be
of great benefit; in the use of the district
messenger call system. By pushing a
button on the top of his new instrument.
which is placed underneath the call box.
one learns immediately whether or not
the call has reached the office. If it has
and the boy will come, a buzzing sound
is heard directly. If there are no boys
in. but one will be sent when he comes,
a button touched at the office sounds
twice. No answering sound means that
the line is out of order and that the call
did not go in. The machine operates by
induction, and an entirely different cur—
rent of electricity is used. a special ad-
vantage over all previous patents. The
apparatus at the district (mice is worked
' by means of an induction coil and a
rapid make-and-break current, producing
the buzzing sound at the subscriber’s
station by means of an electromiagnet
and a rigid iron diaphragm.

The grounds of this Association are
siiuzuul in tlic lorough of Norwalkjust
north of the Union Mills, between Spring
Hill Road and Riverside Avenue, and
may be reached by good and well-kept
roads from all directions. The cemetery
is divided into twenty-two sections, with
