The premium list for the state fair at
1111 riden, September 1‘. to 16 has been is-
sued and the Connecticut Farmer takes
its appearance as the text for an address
on the fair. It calls attention to the
change in the attitude of the railroads
as to the transportation of exhibits and
then continues as follm‘s:——
But the situation must be faced. It. is
not. greatly overstating the case to say
that. the state society has been so entrap-
ped through the cunning of its Meridon
protectors that it must go on and hold
its fair there. Otherwise the Meriden
association may demand its pound of
flesh in the shape of the state society’s
recent improvements.
The exhibition this yea:- must be,
more than ordinarily. alocal one. There
is likely to be very little stock from
Litchfield or Windham county. The
criticism that it does not fairly repre—
sent. the state will probably have unus-
ual force. This should not: prevent a
good showing. There are certainly
choice Jerseys and fine working oxen
enough within ten‘ miles of Mex-idea to
make as fine a show of both as the
grounds there have ever seen, and there
is ample memorial within tench for moot
of the other departments. Let the
grangers, too, take hold early, and
show even more than last year, the pow-
er of organized effort, and the state fair
can, however weak in spots, be made so
attractive to the spectators that there
can be no fear of financinl failure.

former years. The pearl colored high
hats and derbys are rapidly pulhing
them out of fashion. Last year the hat-

mense stock of straws, but they cold so
slowly that no orders for the current
season were given. and perhaps their
sale will eventually stop altogether.
The pearls. as they are called, are trim-
med on the outside very often with nar-
row strips of black cloth. and some pre-

young people deem the strip in good
