One beautiful afternoon in August.
there came to me the heartbroken wife
of a State prison convict. \\'e tried to
plan for his pardon and restoration to
home and the world. It ‘was a very sad
case. He was the only surviving son of
a very noble uian——-.\uo who lived only to
serve the poor. the tempted. and the
L‘l’lilllll‘ll. All he had. all liowas. he
gave unreservedlv to help thieves and
druiikards. Ilis house was thoirhome.

It was a happy hour to hear him tell of
the hundreds he ll'IiI shielded from the
contamination and evil example of pris-
ons. and of the large proportion he had
reason to believe permanently saved.
Out of hundreds. he once told me, only
two left him to pay their bail. forfeited
by neglect to show themsolvos in court
according to agreement—only two.
Bred under such a roof. the son stint-

dreams. and high purpose. Ten years
ol prosperity. fairly earned by energy.

As I parted from the sad wife on my
door step, I looked beyond. and close by
the laughing sen stood 2i handsome rot-
tage. The grounds were laid out ex-
pensively and with great taste. liver

painted chairs and lounges of every easy

the lawn was bordered with them. On
the lawn itself gaily dressed women
laughed merrily over croquet, and noisy
children played near. A span of su-
perb horses pawed the earth impatiently
at the gate, while gay salutations passed
between the croquet players and the
fashionable equipages that rolled by. It
was a comfortable home as well as a
luxurious one. Nature, taste and
wealth had done their best. It was a
scene of beauty. :onifort, taste. luxury
and wealth. .llleumefront rum. Silks

came from rum. Tho owner was one
who, inn great City, coined his gold out
of the vices of his fellowmen. .
To me it was-a dissolving view. I lost
sight of the. gay: women, the, lrolicsomo
children, the impatient horses. and the
ocean rolling up to the lawn. I saw in-
stead the pale convict in his cell twelve
feet by nine; the sad wife going from
judge to attorney. from court to Gover-
nor‘s Council. begging mercy for her
over-tempted, husband. I heard above
the children‘s noise, the croquet, laugh
ter, and the surf waves. the lawyer‘s
stern reason for exacting the full penal-
ty of the law—.III this comes from rum.

her drink. Woe unto him that buildeth his
house by unrightcousness and his cham-
bers by wrong, for the stone shall cry
out of the wall, and the beam out of the
timber shall answer it. "

The temperance enterprise is designed
in the providence of God,‘to cover ground
enough to reach legislatures. A great
many facts have been proved by those
who are in the service of science, but
they are not pertinent to this issue—«not
at all. Temperance is a practical ques-
tion. For instance, in the city of Boston,
the jewel of our crown is our common
schools. “’b spend just under half a
million of dollars annually on our'pub~
Iic schools. If I recollect right. we spend
three-fitths of all our taxes; and. when a
stranger comes from a fur country the
only thing we have to show him is our
schools. \Vell, now, those schools edu-
cate twenty-three thousand minds and
hearts—breed them up step by step to be
suselul, worthy and orderly citizens-—
breed them up to sobriety, integrity and
Christianity. Four hundred and fifty
thousand dollars is the cost, and the
heart. the anxiety, and the vigilance of
the city are the means. Side by side
with that instrumentality are three
thousand grogshops, which the mayor
and alderman of Boston are elected not
to see. Those grogshops, bv the statis~
tics, not of a temperance body, but; of
the chief of police, (an official of the
city which ignores intemperance), tak
ing the average of twenty years, show
this fact: That the same number or
adult men, twenty—two or three thous-
and boys and girls; so that with one
hand the city brings up to God's light,
and with the other dashes down into
darkness the same number of souls.
Well, now, the Christianity of the city
siys, Can’t that: be stoped? Are we
oblidged to sit and told our hands in the
presence or such an evil? Has a man a
right. under any idea of government, to
open. because he owns a lot, a pitfall for
his followmen l’ The right of a man to
drink champagne under his own roof is
undisputed; but prohibition does not
touch that right. Prohibition only says
that, "When you throw open that door,
nndinvitc the passer~by to drink, and(
i ‘ when two hundred years of experience
have proved that by so doing you don-
ble my taxes and make it dangerous for

my child to tread those streets, I have a
right to‘ say whether you shall open that
door or not. I don‘t care whether you
sell him poison or food: I don‘t care
whether you sell him alcohol or roast
beef—it does not matter; all I know is
that. if you undertake to sell him Sillllt“
thing that diubles my taxes, and that
makes my passage through the street
more dangerous, you double this crime,
and I have a right to interfere.“

The grounds of this Association are
situated in the Borough of Norwalk.just
north of the Union Mills. between Spring
Hill Road and Riverside Avenue, and
may be reached by good and well~kept
roads from all directions. The cemetery
is divided into twenty-two sections, with

gratified in the selection of plots. The
