Since the apparatus called gates 11115
been placed at the Main street crossing
much complaint has been made because
of its-insufficient character, and the dan-
gers attending its operation. The wires
are intended simply as a warning of the
approach of trains. and not as a barrier
to an approach to the tracks When the
danger isimminent. \Vhen put upthcre
was a small and inefficient alarm hell at
the operating point. This was removed
almost as soon as the gates were put in
operation, and since then there has been
nothing to signal the closing of the gates.
and instances are numerous where
horses and carriages have been caught
by the wires. and the danger of the cros»
sing actually increased by tl'e presence
of the gates.
An alarm of ample character should
be connected with the gates and sound—
ed soon enough to give fair warning to
those approaching or crossing the track
that they are to be closed. Everybody
realizes the necessity of this but the

officers of the railroad company. and. we
' believe they would see it if llit'y would
only take time enough to watch the ope-
ration» of the gates when travel on the
Crossing is greatest.

enemy to the workingmen in this coun-

in order to improve their condition need
no alliance with the ranting, murderous
anarchists. the saloonist. and his dehased
victims. the loafers, brawlers and black-
guards. It is not their mission to domi-
nate and destroy. but to recognize the
mutual relations of all classes: combine
for the general good, and‘to incite amhi~
ticn as far as possible in all to improve
their conditicn. They do not want to
take from another what he has obtained
by industry and economy and place it
at the disposal of the indolent and pro-
iiigate. They have no use for a man of
Ellendorf‘s stamp for leader. We con-
gratulate them upon forcing him to ac-)

THE REBEL FL.
J 'Presidsnt Cleveland has made at least
one mistake in his public career. In
approving the order for 'ihe restoration
of the rebel flags captured during the war
of the rebellion to the reconstructed
states he has aroused the indignation of
the Union veterans of that war. anti ex-
cited the loyal sentiment of the country.
The protests whichcame from all quar-
ters caused the president to reconsider
his approval of the plan, and he has di<
rooted that'nothing further be done in
the matter. .It is said that be approved
Secretary Endicott‘s plan without proper
deliberation.
It is probably well to remove any Irel~
ingot resentment between the two sec.
tions,__nnd in a large degree this has been
done. but it is_ discounting patriotism
and ignoring loyal service to the country
to attempt to deprive the patriots of the
honor of possessing the trophies of their
services and victories. The time has not
come and never will come in the history
of this country where the sacrifices of its
traitors will be considered equivalent to
the glorious achievements of its defend-
ers. The treason which brought on the
war which cost so much in blood and
treasure in as odious today as when it
wood in hnttlé array, and there is no
. moral-canon why flags captured by the
_Union troops in the terrible conflicts
of the War of the Rebellion should be
returned to the vanquished now than
immediately upon their capture. Time
has removed much of the ill-feeling of
the war, but it has not changed the fact
that" the South was wrong—that the
misery, death and destruction it wrought
were wholly unwarranted. We) may
generously overlook the fault of the
South, butws cannot justly condone its
offense. The captured flags belong to
the nation. Those from whom they
were taken have no claim upon them by
virtue of right, equity or the laws of

ment has given way to forgiveness. but
treason has not become patriotism,

obtained in one of the most severe strug«
gles known in the history of the world.
FOREIGN OYSTER TRADE.
Thelast shipment of oysters to Europe
for the season of 183617 was on May ‘21.
The first shipment was on Sept. 4. The
total business for the season has been
100,906 barrels. being the largest since
the business began. ..-\s will be seen by
the table appended to this article, 18.656
barrels went to Liverpool.
It is a low estimate topplnce the num-
ber of oysters in each barrel at LOGO,
and this makes the aggregate number of
oysters sent abroad this season 100.906,
000. The price has dropped 11 little from
former seasons so that the oysters have
netted shippers about st 130 per barrel
and brought into the countrv ne: 11'lv
half a million dollars.
The foreign oyster 'trailc only uses 1111
the surplus stock. and is but a small
fraction of the oyster business which has
developed into one of the leading indus-
trim of the country
