The country was level and covered with
ycllow pine timber and no undergrowth.
The trees were very tall and slim, with
no limbs until near the top. The soil
was covered with vegetation, a sort of
wild gras‘s‘. There was an abundance of
game in the woods, deer. etc. At the
lake where we made coffee some of the
boys shot an alligator. There were some
swampy places—not very large—from
a half to one or two acres, and which
looked 88 though they might have sunk
down from the surface from some cause,
and many of these places were full of
isnakes. About 9 8.11)., when the sun
was shining very warm, I saw a sight
that I ncver wish to see again. The road
led through one of these low, marsh,
places. ‘It had been filled in just enough
to make the road bed, and on either side
of this road wag. water, bogs, brush,
sticks and everythllig-you would expect
to find in a swamp. This place did not
cover'over half an acre. Everything
was covered with snakes. They had
crawled out in the sun, and everything
that would keep a. snake out: of the wn~
ter was covered with them-even the
sides of the road clear up to the sand.
They did not seem to like to crawl in the
sand. They were two to three feet in
length and qut8 large around. The
boys had their titles loaded, and they
wanted to be discharged before we got
into the city. so they shot the snakes
and killed a good many. It needed
about as much courage for n regiment to
march along a narrow roadway lined on
either side'with those horrid snakes no

planation of the matter. He took to
counting the money in the drawer fre-
quently and at last one day, just after
he had reckoned it up, a prominent crti~
zen came in audprescntly suggested that
the store needed coal. The clerk went.
down cellar for some and immediately
afterwards the visitor walked out. Then
came a chance customer, and when the
clerk put his money in the drawer be
noticed that several dollars had disap-
peared. He told his employer about It
and his story was heard With a good deal
of incredulity. However. a watch was
set and it resulted in absolute proof.
The citizen was seen to help himself sev-
eral times and being charged with the
theft and told something of the evidence
owned up. He has paid back acousider-
able sum and a compromise is to be made.
The thefts are said to have been at. the
rate of about $30 a week, and to have
gone on about four years.
