About half past one Snturdaymorning
lire was discovcrcd in Shormatl‘s livory
stable and the alarm was sounded on the
whistle of the Danbury locomotive stand-
ing at the station. The fire started at
the angle where the second story of tho
stable joins the carriage houso. and
apready.~ rapidly over the hay in the
mow. The firemen responded promptly
stid'worlfod vigorously and the-flames
,were extinguished after a hard light
without «leading beyond the stable
and the second story of the" carriage
house which were thoroughly charred.
together with 18 carriages. The horses
were all got out. and the major part of
the carriages. sleiglis. etc. were saved.
During the fire William llallock fell
from a ladder and broke 3 ribs. Under
Dr. Pardoe‘s care he is doing well. but
will bendable to work ~for a Week or
two. He is an exempt fireman, and
therefore will receive no benefit from
the Stale Fireman‘s Fund. But he
ought. not to be at the lost of his time,
and some means should be provided to
make good his loss time and doctor‘s bill
atlvast.
The loss on the stock has been adjusted
at $1.78! and on the building $2,986.-
Business at the stable has not. been lua~‘
terinlly interfered with, and all damages
will probably soon be repaired. The
stable was owned by D. P. Ely' and the
stock belonged‘ to the estate of the late
S. J. Sherman. . ..

Mr. Lewis Richardsa‘lled this morning
at the rosidence of his daughter Mrs. Oh
ville Duty. Thursday afternoon he was
out doors. and when he came in remark-
ed that he would hover go out again.
During theevening. however, there were
no symptoms of imiucdiate danger. and
at 12 o‘clock he couversed with members
of the family. At 4 o‘clock he was no-
ticed to be breathing heavily and Dr.
Bohaunau was called, but he failed to
rally under treatment and graduall
sank until his death. at 6 o'clock. e
was 87 years, 8 months and 2 days old,
and of late has been quite severely at-
flicted with erysipelas. He had also
weakened quite rapidly during the past
few months, and to was carefully at-
tended uight and day, but there was no
apprehension of his immediate death.
Mr. Richards was born in this town, and
was one ofa family of ei ht children of
remarkable longevity. he first to die
was Mrs. Polly Grows, at which time the,
average age of the eight exceeded 70
years. This is the third death in the
family. The deceased was probably the
oldest person in the city. He was: ship-
carpenter by trade, but gave up work
scventeeu years ago. A
He ween man of a strong constitu-
tion, of in quiet nature and steady habits,
and was universally esteemed. He
leaves no enemies. but a host of warm
friends. The funeral will be held at his
late residence Monday. at 2:30.
