Ferris‘.
The saddest of the many sad accidents
which have occurred on the. railroad
track in this city was the one on Christ
mas evening. which. resulted in the
death of a living couple of young Hun-
garians. Joseph Oriss and his betroth-
ed Lizz‘e Shomtriib started to come up
t.) the city from Springwood on the
Consolidated truck. When a short dis-
tance this side of the bridge they were
struck by the 6.30 train, and thrown t0~
gether into the ditch along side the
track. The young man was instantly
killed, and the young woman lived only
a few minutes. They were undoubted-
ly bewildered by a frieght. train switch-
ing below the depot, and in stepping on
to the up track to avoid the freight
train, they placed themselves immedi-
ately in front of the swift approaching
up train. The remains were put in
[charge of undertaker Gregory, and were,
interred Monday. ,The young man had
been in this country about. six months,
and was employed in Bate‘s fur factory.
The young woman arrived in this coun
try about four weeks ago. They were
to be married tic-night.

The New York; \\‘orld Monday devoted
nearly a page to an account of the life
and death of John Tyler, _wlio died at the
Muhackemo llotsl on the ltlili of Novem-
ber last under circiii‘nstiinces which indi-
cated premeditated suicide. Mr. Tyler
registered under the name of A. Allen.
The, deceased had been a stock broker
and speculator. and a most nrodigiioiis
spendthrift. lie was a member of the
Boston family of Tvlers. which has an
ancient English and New Englaul an-
cestry. His father held ahigh piil-lic
oiiice at one time, and his brothers PllllO
and Elward carry on an immense iron
business. His mother was 69 years old,
and lives at 350 Beacon street. lie bad
one married sister. The deceased went
to New York twenty years ago. and en-
tered into wild speculations and cxtrava~
gant living. He used up all the money
he could get, includining about $100,000
from his relatives. He borrowed from
all his friends. and insured his life in
their favor. “’hen he died he had polis
cies on his life to the amount of $315,-
000. The insurance companies charge
that: the policies secured were the resu It.
of a conspiracy to defraud them and re-
fuse to pay. He had a young wife who
resides in Boston. The affair, if the
claims for insurance are‘pusbed,promises
developments of the most sensational
and scandalous character. The family

the most lax character, and consists
chiefly in the disposition of the inti«
mates. There are no arbitrary rules. and
about the only disciplining is a dismissal
in cases when conduct becomes intoler-
able. All service is voluntary. and of
labor there is next to none. The men
are served with rations of tobacco twice
a week, and have a comfortable smoking
room. where they can enjoy their pipes
and games. There are details for certain
daily duties, but they are requests rath-
er than commands. and a refusal to serve
usually operates as an official excuse.
Nevertheless, there is general good order
and respect for the requests for the Sup-
erintcndent, M. L. Pelham, and but for
the curse of that curse of all curses-—
ruin there would be but little to criticise
about. the Home or its inmates. There
are those enjoying its bospitalit-ies who
use whatever means they can get to pro-
cure liquor, and under its influence rows
are of occasional occurrence, and dismis-
sals sometimes follow.

Congregational church Sunday evening.
and there was a large congregation in
attendance. The exercises consisted of
singing by the choir, solo. "Nativity,“
by Horace llatcli. duct by Miss Thomas
and Mrs. St. John, readings by Percy
Swords. Grace Millard. Jennie McKune,
and Ella Hilsdon, rccitations by mem-
bers of the primary department and
songs by the school. The singing by
Master Sidney Bramble exhibited a re‘
markable yout'x ful voice and musical
talent. The pastor, Mr. Ross. spoke to
the children. The exercises lasted an
hour and ii half and were of a very in-
(creating character. The choir deserve
special» mention for the fine rendering
which they gave to some choice selec-
tions. The organist also deserves a good
deal of praise. but. it isn‘t usual to praise
an organist, and we don‘t want to intro~
duce any novelty in reporting till we get
on the Herald staff and 32m secure there.
