Sunday afternoon about half past four.

window of thc cabin of the sloop “Al-
berr t‘.“ owned by “'illis E. Bell, and
lyingat his father‘sdock. loaded with
oystcrs. After a hard fight the fire w. s
subdued. but not until the cabin and con-
tents Were ruined. Mr. Bell lost all his
clothing, lights and cabin furniture. Hts
loss will probably amount to $300. The
origin of the fire isa mystery. Astrive was
left burning in the cabin about 3 o‘clock,
but the drafts were all closed. After the
tire was put out the stove was found in
the condition in which it had been left,
and the coal last- put on the fire was not
burned. No’ damage was done to the.

Geo. \V. Kendrick. while shoveling
snow for C. M. Lawrence last. Monday
morning. had an attack of paralysis from
which he died in the evening. As he
had no work that day in the Lock Fac—
tory, where he has been employed about
six years, Mr. Lawrence asked him if.
he would like to take the job of clearing
house. He said he would. and arrived
at the house about 9 o’clock. and went
in and sat a little while by the fire. and
then went out torclear a walk in the
yard. In a few minutes after Mrs. Law-
rence saw that he was down on the walk
and unable to get up. \Yith the assis-
tance of neighbors he was taken into
the house and restoratives applied, but
as he did not show improvement, Dr.
Bahamian was called. He was then
taken to his home. He continued to
fail during the day, and about half past;
six quietly away. He was sixty
eight years old, and leaves a widow and
four children. His funeral was held at

is the right man in the right place. Since
the organiz uion of the city, a number
have practically ignored the city ordins
mince relative to the clearing of side-
walks of snow, and wlnlc the majority
of the property owners and occupiers
have made their walks passable they
have left theirs in a bad condition. Mr.
\\'arrcn has taken steps that will give
us clcau walks all over. \Veduesday he
put a force of men on walks that had
been neglected. and the expenSe of cleau~
ing them will be a bill against, the pro-
perty unless their owners or occupiers
pay up. There is some kicking, but. no
one can question the Justice of the
street. committee‘s attain. The law is
for all and should be observed by all.
Mr. “’arren proposes to treat. all alike.
The way to avoid trouble and bad humor
is for all to comply cheerfully with the
ordinance. and with this one lesson they
will probably do so.

Editors of (he Sentinel:—\\'ould it not
be a good thing to run the road machines
along the sides of our streets and scrape
the snow which is piled up in the gutters
into the middle of the streets. This would
make good sleighing and get rid of all
of the banks of snow that line the streets
and block the gutters. By doing this
after, every large snow storm sleighiug‘
would be good all winter. Constant
travel on the packed snow would soon
make it as hard as ice. and make winter
driving a pleasure, instead of a torture,
as is now the case.
