of these obstructions. and the liability of
the city should a team in passing be

The roadway in cities. between curbs.
is especially dedicated to teams. and the
sidewalks to pedestrains. and it is the
duty at the City to see to it and keep
them clear and free for their respective

our traveled thoroughfares. make the
city. in the law. guilty of gross negli-
gence. and is cause for full daiiuiges to
any one who may stiller by reasoiiof

It is to be hoped that the. Council will
not. tire in the good woik which they
have begun. by having thetrecs reinovi d
from the sidewalk on Clay street and
from the gutters in Union street. but
will now have the trees removed from
the gutters in South Main Street. before
the city is called upon to respond in dain-
agea for-injuries which are at any mo.

The election in this state has resulted
in giving the-Republicans a majority in
the legislature and secures the choice of
Republican state officers. The Demo-
crats elect three of the four congreas~
men, making a gain of one. s-
This town has given an old time 1\t“
publican majority. ltlr. Lounsbury leads
the ticket with a vote of 1495. and has a
majority over Mr. Cleveland ct 8‘28. and
has 56. more votes than the candidates
for lieutenant-governor and comptroller,
who represent the party strength on the
state ticket. Mr. Lounabury has 64 more
vote- than the highest Republican can~
didate for representative. In this dis-
trict Mr. Lounahury beats Mr. Cleveland
by 187 votes. and in the third district by
71. He has occasion to" be-well pleased
with his vote in this town, which, inra
large sense, represents his home‘populaE-
ity. Harrison‘s majority here in 1384
was 982. Blaine‘a majority was 811:
Ebenezer J. Hill carried his district in
fine style. overcoming Mr. smith’s plu~
rality 0! 854 of a year ago and securing a
plurality of 292. Mr. Hill‘s majority
exceeds the expectation of his most san-
guine friends. His record makes him
elligible to the freefor-all in any pollti~
at race or the future.
7 John H. Ferris. despite the acurrilloua
means to incite the worklngmen against
him. received a majority of 146 over his
_hi¢hoat and 1:55 over his lowest Demo-
cratic compotltor.’ His vindication is
(template. The infamous circular which
was rent out over the rignature of “La-
bor” proved a hummus. It is due to
the labor organizations of the town to
, Itatc that the circular was authorized
by them”. and they could not do a more
honorable and creditable thing than'to
publicly declare that it was issued
without their sanction. They can-
not word to allow this attempt of a
few unscrupulous men. to tradnce,
in their name. the character of a
worthy citizen. toga unrebuked. The
ornaments. sentiments and animus of
that circular, we believe. are a libel on
theworklnxmon’a organizations of this
town. Ir. Brady. Ir. Ferrir' colleague,
receivedavery flattering vote. carrying
jihowndutriothandromolyandrunning
‘ tended to all
verv close to lilr. Ferris in the seiond
and third districts. Thire was no sacs
riticing of Mr. Brady for Mr. Ferris. and
no sectional interests were perinittt-d to
intliierice the'voto. it was a fair, manly
tight. and resulted in a glorious victory.
It ought. to, and we believe will. be the
last election in this city in which at
tempts will be made to lzcep alive nni~
mositics that ought to be buried forever.

of these clubs and all other places where

ten niihs out of \Vorcester the ex ress
was running through a dense groiini fog
w hen the engineer w histled down brakes
and stopped the train. He had smelled
something unusual and wanted to see

with blood. Part of a horse with a few
