be willing to devote a portion of your
paper to classical learning as well as to
the new-{angled notion of Prohibition. I
send you a translation of a table which I
never saw in anv of the common classical
works anl which I am inclined to think
is a new discovery. I would give, the
L'ititi text did all your readers belong to
the '83”le g. o. p‘s.; but. as so many of
them are “cranks“ and "fools“ who can
read nothing but English. but who can
read that as Well as anybody respeeially
in party “platforms.“i I will translate
the manuscript.

In the meantime another son was born

his hand at removing the stone. He
came and looked at the rock and said he
thought he could do it.

How his brothers laughed and hootcd
at him! They forgot to make faces at
one another while they made merry at
their young brother. Then as he sit to
work they sWore at him. called him a
“crank." "fool.“ ”youngster of one idea."
etc.. etc. lint he turned his crank and
worked his "one idea“ \vitli enthusiasm
just as though he thought he was going
to do something. He brought a strong
chain just like his brother‘s. behold. it
was only three feet long. He also
brought an anvil and heavy hammer.
Ills elder brother pointed to his eighteen
foot chain and angrily demanded how a
three foot chain could do more than an
eighteen. foot chain. llut the three
chains till belonged to the father. and the
-old man isetiexi gave the youngest
brother liberty to use anything on the
farm. ‘

So the young fellow heated tliecntls of
the three chains in the tire of enthusi‘
sent} and welded them on t ie anvil lof
conviction] with the hammer [or argu‘
ment] and he had a strong chain (in-urg-
seven feet long! He quickly hauled the
rock to a neighboring swamp where it
sank out of sight forever.

Iloth brothers refused to stir from the
rock and one sank with it. beneath the
mud where his body lies unto this day.
The other fell in front of the rock and
had all his limbs broken and he did not
recover for many a day. and. when he
did. he declared he never wanted to hear
of that rock again.

This fable teaches
(Here. I am sorrv to say. a part of the
manuscript is missing and the moral will
have to be sup ilied from the reader‘s
inisgination.— rainstorm-.1

A friend of mine. who is also a
“crank.“ has given me the following
hints for the reconstruction of the moral:
Rock—whiskey. Eldest lll‘OIllt‘l-‘di‘nlu-
cratic party. Second brotlier—republi~
can partv. Youngest brother—Prohibi-
tion party. Chains—probiliition voters
in each. ity. Tow strings—whiskey
voters. e says also that as a chain and
luring are no stronger than the string
alone. so a party is not stronger than its
weakest port oti whether that be large or
small. But of course he is only a
“crank“ and his opinion is merely an
emanation of "one idea“ and hence good
for nothing.

If any 0 your learned readers can suit.“
gest a better moral for this fable. 1 should
be glad to receive it rendered into classi-
cal Latin that I may publish it with the
Original of the shove translation.
