Knight street was totally destroyed by
fire Monday evening. The fire was dis-
covered in a loft used for a store room.
The tlatiies spread rapidly. but by great
exertions all the horses but one. and the
wagons. with the exception of a small
carryall and one buggy were removed.
The horse which was burned belonged
to Frederick Lockwuod. and was being
boarded at the stable. A large number
of sleighs stored in the loft. together
with a lot of harnesses were deetroved.
The weather was very cold. but the fire-
men valliantly fought the flames. and by
their almost superhuman eff-ins saved
the adjoining property. Lacking at the
ruins and the nature of the buildings sur-
rounding the one destroyed. and consid-
ering the galer that was blowing, it seems
almost a miracle that a mineral conflu-
grntion was prevented. Several of the
firemen suffered severely from the cold.
they being covered with ice. Norwalk
is proud of. its fire dc rtment and it has
occasion to he. The uilding was insur-
ed for $1.500. and Mr. Gregory had
$312.00 on vehicles. 81,750 on horses.
and $787.50 on gram. he herneneee, etc.

Miss Susan Adams died at her resi-
dence on Orchard street last Tucsdny of
pncanomia. She was sick but three
dnye. Her funeral was attended at her
late residence ynxstcrday. RM’. Mr. An-
derson officiating. The deceased was
the eldest sister of Mr. E. Adams of this
city and one of three remaining of a
family of ten. At an early age. by the
dcceasc of licrinothcr. the care of the
family came on her. and she discharged
the obligations thus devoting upon her
in a manner beyond her years. and d».

and his interment took place \Vednesday.
The deceased was well known in this
city. where he had long_ made his resi-
dence. He enlisted during the Mexican
war. but. did not get into active service.

listed under the call for three months
men in Company H of the Third Con-
necticut Volunteers. H‘e afterward en-
listed in Company B. (bapt. Jas. L. Rus—
sell‘s command). Eight Connecticut. for
three years. and reached the rank of eer-
geant. When the regiment was about.
to start on the Burnside ‘expedition to
Hatteras. Sergeant Whiternnn, owing to
ill healtb,vvaslcft at: Annapolis to be dis
charged. Instead of waiting for his dis-
charge he went to Washington and pro~
cured it, which caused him to be put
down as u deeerter. This matter was
afterward rectified. He was a sol-
dier. He had been in feeble health for
some time. but for realms was not able
to secure a pension. e was a member
of Douglas Fowler Post. members of
wflch served as pull bearers at the fun-
