first. and the general opinion was that

Jersey “alters on Strike.
On Thursday the New York papers re~
ported that several hundred batters in
the employ of Cummings. Matthews &
Brady. in the valley district of Orange.
N. J.. went on strike. For some time
the hatutakers have been etideavoriui: to
do away with what is known as “back-
eye“ shops. which take. Work from the
large manufacturers and do it cheaper
than it is done by the union men. Re~
cently they adopted a ticket. to he plac-
on hats. showing that the work wasdone
by “fair“ or union men, and sought to
com el manufacturers to use the ticket.
The alter declined to do so. On Mon-
day E. V. Uunnett & 60.. announced
their refusal, and their men turned out.
On Tuesday McCall G: Allen did the
same, and Cummings. Matthews & Bra-
dy followed Thursday. About 400 men
are now on strike and they are all malt-
era. It is probable that the finishers
will (to-operate and strike too. and the
possibility is that in a week a thousand
men will be idle in the Orange batting
district.
