There is a point in the present election
issue in‘tliis city which should be fairly
considered by those in the hailing trade.
It is an indisputable fact that the busi-
ness is being injured hue. lit-cause of
lack of help. It is: the g-‘ii‘eral complaint
that. orders cannot. be tilled. nil custo-
mers must be disappointed. This is as
true of the co~operative factories as the
others, so that the scarcuy is not be-
cause of any feeling toward employers
growing out of the strike. It is general-
ly'conccded that wages me higher here
than in Danbury, yet the factories there
have been able to increase their produc-
tion by a thousand cases a week. There
is a reason why men will not come to
this district to work. and it is generally
Weekly to furnish funds for some very
indefinite object. The better prices are
not an offset for the assessment. This
scarcity of batters is detrimental to the
trade as well as manufacturers. Dealers
will not place orders where they cannot
get them filled.
1t behooves everybody connected with

batting business removed before it has
done irreparable injury to the halting
industry of the city. A long step to-
ward accomplishing a large and permas
nent benefit to the halting business can
be taken next Monday by a general sup-

that the batting business has settled into
its usual permanacy.

The next day another prisoner was
tried. Captain Lee, a blushing. inno-
cent youth. was charged with violating
rule .\‘o. 47. “Owe no man anything.“
The Chaplain acted as judge. Secretary
Olmstead was “persecuting attorney,“
and the chaplain of‘St defended. The
prisoner elected to be tried by his peers.
Accordingly Pete. Charlie and Fred. culs
ored gentlemen of high repute in the
cook's galley. were sworn as jurors.
Fred had a very large foot. the sole. of
which Charlie used as a writing desk.
uprin which he took down notes of the
trial. Pete. with his legs and feet twists
ed about his chair and his hands firmly
pressing against his sides. and mouth
thrown wide open, had all he could do
to keep himself from exploding or shoot-
ing off like a sky-rocket. One of the
best evidences in’ favor of the intelli-
gence of the jurors was the fact that all
of them turned their toes in. The only
accident which happened during: the
trial'u‘lis when the main boom swung
around and struck the jury. knocking
them heels over head in one Confused,
sprawling. kicking, yelling mass of arms
and legs and feet and chairs. In due
time this mass was disentangled and the
jury resumed their seats and listened to
the eloquent and flattering remdrks of
both attorneys. The jury rendered a
verdict in favor of the prisoner on the
righteous principle that they would do
