went into the Fairlield County:Nationsl
Bank to prepare for the business of the
dav. On entering be detected a strong
odor of gas. He went to the large safe
and ‘opened the outside door, and the
odor was stronger. He then lighted
a match to discover the leak which
caused a tremendous explosion. which
threw hint a distance of ten feet.
overturned the safe. torn out the wins
dows. and played havoc. generally with
the oflice. Mr. Lewis received several
bruises but was not seriously injured.
The explosion was heard throughout
the business portion of the borough.
and caused considerable excitement. A
gas light is kept burning in the safe dur~
ing the night. and it is supposed that it
was put out 'hiesday evening when‘the
safe w” closed. and that the gas had
been escaping all night.

The officers of the Second Regiment
voted on Friday evening to accept the
offer of the New Haven 'Stcatnboat
company to transport the regiment to
New York for the funeral of General

has engaged the W'allingford band. and
the Second regiment Band does not like
it. The expenses are to be met by an
assessment of $1.50 a man through the
entire regiment.

' Wrecked ofl‘ Brandford.
The schooner S. S. Scranton sprang a
leak off Branford Beacon Monday after-
noon and sunk in six minutes. There
was a heavy sea running and it is sup-
posed the laboring of the vessel. which
was loaded with brick caused the leak.
The condition of the schooner was not
known until the captain noticed that she
was very heavy and rolled as if water
logged. He tried the pump and found
her full of water. There was only one
other man on board and calling him the
captain got out a boat and the pushed
off. Almost as they did so I. e vessel
ran bow under and went down. The
two men had hard work in making land
but after an hour and a half went ashore
at the old New Haven lighthouse. The
schooner was owned by the Fisliers‘
Island Brick company and was valued
at $5,000.
