The seventeenth annual reunion of,

be held at l’awson park on August 12.
Families and lady friends of the veterans
are invited. Those intending to be pres-
ent are requested to bring their tiwu
provisions. Members who may find it
inconvenient to do so can be supplied
upon the grounds. The regiment Will
meet on the green. near the corner of
Chapel and Church straits. New Haven
at it a. in. and proceed to Belle dock.

convey the party to Pawson park.
Sunday afternoon fire was disctivered
in Brown. McCalina & Cottrell‘s hat fac—
tory. It was under a stairs leading from
the boiler room. At first it was thought
to be incendiary but investigation by fire
marshall Towbridge disclosed that it ori-
ginated in the heaps of soft coal under
the stairs. where some heat came from
the brick walls inclosing the boiler. The
damage was trifling. lu removing the
ctiai it was found to be coaked consider-
ably at a depth of about two feet. It.
has since been removed to another place
where there is no heat.

that Mr. George A. Briggs has entered
into business relations which will take
him away from Claremont: it is but
four and a half years since he bought
the drug store of “’illis & Baker. but

for Scranton. Pa" last Wednesday morn-
ing to superintend the manufacture of
the Austin Combination Grate Bars.

3. 1885. All competent parties who have
exaii lned:the workings of these bars
are loud in their praises. and many have
been especially impressed with the spec-
imen bars which have been in the hot fire
and which shows practically the fact
that wrought iron easily withstands an
amount of heat which soon melts cast
iron away. Dr. Lockwood of Norwalk
has assocmted himself with Mr. Austin
in the manufacture and sale of these
grate bars and owns one half of the pat-
ent and a controlling interest in the bits-
iness. A set of bars are now being made

n... time appointed for the trial of eight
members of tlIchlvalion Army arrested
last \\'ediiesday night for violation of
tho city ordinance relating to
parades. a crowd gathered in front of
the council chamber. where the trial
was to be held. The accused were there.
also. together with other members of llll‘
Army. As soon as the door was opened
there was it rush. and the room was soon
tilled. t‘ity Attorney Light appeared
for the prosecution. and David Strauss
of Bridgeport for the defence. The trial
began about half past one. M r. Strauss
put in a deniurer. denying the legality of
the ordinance under which the arrests
were made and argued that the Common
Council had no right to delegate to the
t‘liief of police the power to permit or
prohibit parades as prescribed III the
ordinance. He. held that. the Council
could not appoint a judicial otficer which
functions were performed by the t‘liief
of police in this instance. City attorney
Light did not question the authorities
quoted by Mr. Strauss. hilt put a reveise
interpretation upon them. He said it
was absurd to suppose that the Council
must be convened whenever a permit
was asked to parade. It was a well
established fact. that ordinances were
legal when the administration was
delegated to specific authority. He held
that the Council had a right to appoint
an officer to administer the law. and that
the Chief of police acted lawfully in that
capacity Judge Ely overruled the
demurer. The cases then were continued
till yesterday morningovhen the accused
were found guitly by the Judge and
fined $1.00 and costs each. An appeal
was taken and bonds were given in $100
each for trial at the Superior Court.
The matter excites a good deal of
interest and some feeling, but there is a
general disposition to have the question
finelly determined as to what rights the
Salvation Army has under the Constitu-
tron.
Capt Rainey commissioner for the state,
desires permission for the army to pamde
with music on certain evenings as has
been granted in other cities. If this is
refused he says they will consider it
their duty to parade without such per-
mission. let the consequences be what
they may. He would rather, however.
that. they could do their work without
a conflict with the city authority.
City Attouey Light in his argument
said the ordinance was not passed in a
vindictive spirit. but because of necessity
there being complaint that. the parades
frightened horses, and were an annoy-
ance and disturbance. .
Probably some arrangement will be
made whereby further conflict will be
aypided. and the army given a reason-

connected with trade in Orange is the

heretofore have made nothing but soft
goods. There are at present about ten

connection with soft hats. and the
number is constantly Increasing. The
growth of the new branch ts being
closely watched by those interested iii
trade. for on its success or failure may
depend much of the future of batting in
Orange. The foothold that stiff batting
already has in Orange is shown by the
fact that there are at present at least
one hundred men employed in finishing
this class of goods. and about a like
number of girls employed in trimming

cuts more than one-eighth of the entire
number working at the finishing branch
